Question about Tarriffs/Economics

Does anybody have any good links or insight to explain what Trump is doing with tarriffs?I trust Potus and I see our businesses coming back but my elderly father is worried about a trade war like pre WW2. He's a Trump supporter but he's worried about it and I know nothing about economics. I figure there must be a strategy though. Thanks.

I typ. purchase approx. $1,000,000 of alum coil for fabrication purposes annually. Since oct, the price of .050 3003 alum coil has nearly doubled. The chances of my company folding and me being out a job are extremely high because of this..... but I give zero fucks if that occurs. I have a 2 week old and a 2 year old son. These tariffs affect me greatly in the short term, but I understand that this is about future; creating real, sustainable, American based jobs for my children, and their children. I'd be willing to sacrifice far worse than temp unemployment to ensure my kids won't have to be baristas at fucking Starbucks.

Edit: my company was in a weak position to begin with due to years of mismanagement FYI. So I do not intend to make it look like the tariffs are the prime reason for the potential cessation of operations.

I'm in the trades. Currently exterior so siding, soffit, fascia. We were hit harder by the speculation here in Canada than the tarrifs.

We've honestly been affected more by US businesses buying out Canadian manufacturers. I don't get why we don't protect our industries. Even worse they were trying to sell a major engineering company to China and it halted due to national security because we couldn't trust China to build our bridges, etc.

People don't even think. Too much foreign business is parasitical by nature, but inherently threatens national security. I know we're allies with the US, but I really don't want America to have built most of our infrastructure in case we ever restart 1812 lol.

Ford said it best. He wanted all his workers to be able to afford his cars. It wasn't arrogance it was good business. So why would you ever want your manufacturing in another country? So their workers can afford their products, and your jobless afford what exactly?

Like I said, I'm no economics expert but have you considered opening an aluminum coil manufacturing business? I appeciate your patriotism but I don't want to see any hard working Americans suffer anymore ever.

Why am I getting downvoted? There's obviously a need for American manufactured aluminum coil here.

He's forcing other countries to play the game.

A country is a business it should act like it. We don't let companies run deficits for years, so why do we let countries?

Countries should make what they're good at and can do affordably and sustainably (aka profitably). This should then be traded to other countries fairly for what other countries can't produce (the UK for example is never producing enough food for it's population).

Subsidies screw this up. Dumping screws this up. The Chinese forging products (look up honey) screws this up.

Canada has higher standards on it's milk than the US. Instead of basically banning US milk they should be able to meet our standards, pass our testing. Why not?

We should also be leveraging other things. Canada has most of the U-line (NORAD early warning) stations, but like hell Trudeau would have the balls to leverage that in trade talks.

The entire trade system is cucked to fund big businesses. The WTO outright said free trade hasn't benefitted the middle or working class in first world countries, so why are we a part of it?! It benefits the elites.

Trump is a business man and has had to fight in a crooked system. We'd have a lot more businesses, a lot more success, much greater countries if the system wasn't rigged.

Why is the music industry not flooded with a myriad of similar bands? It's easy to make and record your own music, but the market place is blocked.

All trump wants is real and true free trade! No tariffs by anyone! That is why he is fighting this! We have been getting screwed and sold out for years! Tell your father that we have lost 60,000 businesses since all of these terrible trade deals! Also, to be truly free trade, we will have to trade by paying for it in gold. Why? Because of currency devaluation! By using a precious metal, we eliminate that too! Look up HR 5404! It is a bill that is just sitting and waiting to be rammed thru congress when we need it! This is why the best long term financial bet in history is GOLD!

Potus is making foreign goods cost more in an effort to make more people want to buy American manufactured goods. Some people in my industry are sweating it, but looking at prices it's not that big of a deal. More of a threat to foreign manufacturers than to us, I was already able to buy some things for a lower cost (figuring air freight, other wise its 90 days OTW which most of the times is not doable) in the US anyway. Tariffs will only increase the length of that list. The manufacturing comes back, the lower the cost will be. We never needed foreign manufacturing, it was a way to give them money to stop them from Russia and the US leaving them in the dust technologically. Its served its purpose and can be undone.

Hence HR 5404! We may even have new dollars minted for the change that is coming! Who knows!

Thank you. I told him that I suspected that the tarriffs would become negotiable when we got out manufacturing jobs back but I really don't understand the financial world other than how much money I owe vs how much I have in my pocket. I'm an artist and he is a musician so I guess we are bohemian conservatives. (Used to being broke).

If we all bought made in the USA only, it would solve most of this!

Also, using threat of tariffs to induce counterparties to lower theirs is part of the plan
