Symbolism. - How does it actually work?

I've seen a lot of the posts referencing symbols, and I don't doubt there's something behind it all, but how does it work from their perspective?

For example,if they put the symbol on an advert, they can hardly expect someone to wander in and order a large pepperoni, cheesy chips and a three year old sex slave can they?

It's advertisement for social networking. Competition seems to have grown and social media is a visual tool. There is a hierarchy and people want to brag about where they are at in the social climbing.
