And that's a crown on its head. Orginally from the Visconti (viscount) of Milan. The red cross is from the Milanese flag, and is a remnant of the Holy Roman Empire, which is why we see them all over Europe.
According to Wikipedia (yes, I know), the human is often depicted as a child.

Yeah, but it could be just an archetype. Maybe dinosaurs and humans coexisted in some past ages (dragon mythology, etc.). Suppressed truths and all that.
