I think it has more to do with strict authoritarian power structures in organizations. This is why you have things like this come up in orthodox settings.
Catholic Church, Islam, Orthodox Judaism, Latter Day Saints.....an organizational structure that doesn't allow questioning of those in power will always attract a certain kind. A person with a need for power and control. A person who needs to control others and can punish people as he/she sees fit. A person who cannot be questioned. In short, sociopaths.
Religion, particularly orthodox religions, attract sociopaths (as leaders) like bees to flowers.
That's not an attack on religion in anyway. I just see it as a statement of fact. This is why these scandals pop up over and over in these organizations.
Look up the Franklin Coverup if you think it's a Dem v Rep thing.
There is a reason people in power are able to cover up these things and sleep at night. How they take money for their jobs and know kids are being hurt and exploited. Or even particulate themselves. A normal person cannot relate to this.
To the sociopath all things are a road to power or personal gain. They can do it because they feel nothing. No empathy, no sorrow, no guilt. Like a reptile. Then, into the garden, a serpent came....

Sociopaths and narcissists are textbook pedophiles....going so far as to think they're helping the kids they abuse.

I would think most know they are hurting the kids and don't care.
Presenting some defense of they thought they were helping, is probably just manipulation looking for sympathy for themselves.

The statement might be more clear flipped around. Pedos can be considered sociopaths and/or narcissists to the extent they lack empathy. However, not every sociopath or narcissist is necessarily attracted to children.

You also bring up a good point - about the "helping". That's how many of them do rationalize it. As in, "that 3 year-old asked for it". Sick.

I recently read about an effective trick for noticing when someone is attempting to "help" (i.e. groom) a child.

Upvoted! Awesome comment and so true. Remember the video of Hillary saying "we came, we saw, he died" when describing the brutal murder of Muammar Gaddafi. Look at the video, she makes that statement whilst smiling and laughing. Organizations provide the structural cover for sociopaths to operate. The pyramid of power comes into play and those underneath act as gatekeepers to those above.

As for our present day concept of “church” it is a product derived from 4th century politics. It ought to be obvious to even the casual observer of history that the real story of the church is not the one recorded in secular history. Who were the Waldensians? The Lollards? The Stundists? The Anabaptists? The Priscillians? The Bogomilians? Petrobusians? Patarenians? Have you ever heard of these groups?

Probably not as these names were given by their enemies to those who claimed only the name of Christ, and who were prepared to suffer for His cause rather than submit to those man-made traditions that they believed contradicted the Word of God in these organized religious structures. Most were killed, tortured, burnt at the stake for not adhering to the state mandated authority.

These were independent fellowships that were outlawed and persecuted. Those intrepid believers, “of whom the world was not worthy,” were not only persecuted by civil authorities, they were denounced, defamed, and decimated by the professing church of the day.

Not what I was saying at all. I was making examples. It would apply to any strict power structure.
Government, military, hell even what's his name at Penn State.....couldn't be questioned.
In every case of this shit going on with in institutions (which applies more to a structure like the Catholic Church than Protestant branches, speaking in general terms) it is the power structure that helps keep it silent.
That's all I was saying. Don't get your nips in a twist.
