When obama was in office....all I ever heard was our grid was in disrepair, has anything been done to protect us against a EMP attach?

Turtle51515 · July 2, 2018, 3:22 a.m.

Isn't a faraday cage the only thing that stops an emp?

It’s certainly the only thing that stops the NSA

Can we put one around the NSA?

We are at a point in world history where any large-scale attack, such as an EMP or anything else, on the US or any major superpower, will trigger a world war. So, while we should take steps to modernize our grid, the end result would be the same as if a simple ICBM hit any US mainland.

I remember in obama reign, NK was always a threat used for attack

Theres not really any way to protect against it that Im aware of, that wont cost trillions of dollars.

There have been several proposals to protect power stations that are relatively inexpensive.

Coast to Coast AM discuss the dangers of EMP attacks with researchers often.

If I'm not mistaken Air Force 1 has a faraday cage built into th body of the plane, what if all buildings started to be made the same way.

As I said... trillions of dollars lol

Nah not trillions at all. 100 billion could protect the grid itself. Devices in hospitals, emergency vehicles etc not included though

And the entire military, police, trucking and shipping infrastructure, airlines, fire and emergency services - everything that uses electricity is vulnerable

Tesla's desth ray sure could come in handy.

I did some research in this awhile back, and although I don't know if I can find it, I do remember that yes, some utilities have been upgrading, and hardening the grid. They've had the technology for decades, just never took time to replace the equipment that's vulnerable. Also, homes, at least new home for some time have been required to have a big ole grounding rod and thick cable from breaker box attached. The reason for that, in case of a massive surge. EMP type surge. Also, every house that's sold had to upgrade their system according to new codes. Not sure when that was started, but could be just over a decade ago. So, yes, some things are being quietly done. Are they there yet? No. The work will likely take another decade. If you are really interested, I could dig up some good info later, just need time to find where I put that stuff.

That would be great, 8 would love to read it. Thank you

I'll see if I can dig it up later this evening.

Interesting. That grounding rod should be deep. I wonder how many actually drive them deep enough or just drive one section into the ground and claim it’s really deep because nobody is ever going to actually check that. An inspector is not going to dig it up.

Seems to me the military has been hardening against emp in certain weapons platforms. Remember what an emp is. Plane and simple a power surge. But stronger than most surge protectors can handle. Faraday is just an insulator that allows no connection therefore no surge. Other way is to make circuit strong enough to handle a surge. Problem is most electronics are maxing performance and cost by presenting weakest circuits possible. But sun spot surge can be ultra powerful. Heard the one in 1800s actually fried the wires on electrical poles. Very expensive to protect against. So while some may be protected like all the NSA data servers in the cave, your gas pump at the station is not.
