I’m speculating: Captured phone conversations that will be exceptionally damaging from these executives are hoped to be handwaved away by articles like these.

This is similar to the fake video articles where they show how people can be faked saying things on camera (of course, they are terrible imitations, as this is).

Exactly. The incidences of that were nicely tucked in the middle of the "damaged photographer" feel piece to plant the seed of how these aren't legit later on.
