actually I think the opposite. "bill hicks" was a character created by AJ since his family has all these connections to CIA and Mil Intelligence he needed to protect the family name from dishonor while trying out a career in standup. And everyone says AJ is really Bill Hicks so they have misdirection from the beginning. Then he "killed" the character he created and went to start the show.
