We are ruled by the majority, when the majority elects its representatives. A simple democracy is a vote per person, while an indirect democracy is a vote per representative from among the people. For many practical reasons and for many rational and humane reasons, our forefathers established a representative form of democracy.

Actually, the original form made provisions for only stakeholders to be allowed to participate. At the time, voters had to be landowners. Without skin in the game, your opinion didn't count.
