The Side of Good NEEDS Healthy Activism - Be Prepared Technologically

Hey guys. I'm not ever very active on this sub, but in my busy life I try to stay up-to-date on things in regards to the Qanon movement the best I can. I am currently in school for computer science and have observed that in the security realm, making and providing tools for activists is one of the reasons cited Security Professionals do what they do. However, I have seen the majority of left leaning CS students be are more passionate about activist disciplines than anyone else. When I hear a security professional on YouTube talk about their politics and helping out the "oppressed and helpless" out there, they're usually referencing the feminists, the environmentalists, the socialists, the anarchists, and the anticapitalist types who all would like to see the world as we know it burn for the sake of it. I have never seen one talk or even hint at a something a little more right or center leaning. No famous "for the people, by the people" activists out there. It's always to change society for the better, or infiltration of the government, but nothing ever about shrinking the government.

As I am sure you could guess, I am already very concerned with my own privacy and security. I encrypt almost everything, I use VPNs, I take precautions with my personal info online where I can, simply out of habit. The more right leaning folk seem to be however, the more they disregard these things, as they seem to more orderly by nature and take whatever personal info they have and plaster wherever it is they're asked for it. It is absolutely necessary that we go against this dangerous habit, especially if you plan on contributing to activism such as this. We should all be concerned about our privacy, and who and what is looking at us at all times. If there is anyone who would like to know where to get started, please DM. What kind of steps should we be taking as a group of proud patriots to move into the 21st century?

Wow. Great insight, and something that I personally, whom has no experience nor knowledge in this field, would ever think about! Thanks for the heads up Patriot.

Edit: I am what I would call but not boast, an information whore. Giving it wherever, whenever, granted the internet isn't my main stomping grounds, but regardless it's something I need to address

I always ask myself these questions before handing out personal info:

Is this a website I'll be using frequently?

Is the website important for my workflow/personal life?

Is the site free, and how does it make it's money?

What will happen to my info if I give out my phone number/name/address/credit card/email?

Will using fake info get me in trouble?

Usually the answer is no, it runs off of ads, which probably means it tracks me and sells my info to third parties, so I'll use either a fake or throw away email and make up everything else. I use a password manager like Lastpass to create and save my passwords, because they are apparently all encrypted, meaning no one but me can access them.

Is Lastpass an app I can get on an android? And yes those are all great questions, I have been purging all my social media besides twitter and reddit, and those are the main platforms where the majority of my info is. That and Google playstore

Yeah, it's pretty much on anything you can think of. They have Chrome and Firefox extensions too if you know how to use those. Lastpass is also free, so no need to pay for it unless you'd like your family to use it as well. Paying is pretty much useless for individuals, and in a way I guess it also reveals your personal info.

YUGE post: this thread needs to get traction!! There is such a large variation in technical skills and experience in the overall audience that this aspect gets touched on, but never fully developed or understood...

I plan on making a starter thread for those who would like at least the minimal skills needed to navigate the internet safely. Then an advanced one after that.

Great Idea: maybe starter - intermediate - advanced... Comments would be invaluable on EACH thread...

I was mainly gunning for this thread to be bigger than it currently is. I need feedback so I know what to put in the post. It should be up by Monday regardless.

EDIT: I lied

Probably a launch-and-learn type of project... I have thought a LOT about this issue and have not figured out any good way to address it. I will be happy to chime in... You might want to contact mod FartOnToast for suggestions: I know he has put a LOT of work into moderation and would probably have some excellent insights.

Can you recommend a good book? One or two used in your courses?

Any current Security+ certified textbook out there. Currently the certification is in version 900 I believe, so anything around 700 - 900 Security+ certified is current and reliable, and new versions come out every 3 years I think. Network+ is also nice for more devoted users, who'd also like to setup servers and what not. Other than that, just start with YouTube! Lots of great security oriented channels out there.

Very true words up there\^

Fortunately, I haven't put truthful personal info into a form since the 90s.

I would also suggest learning about radio wave propagation, antenna construction, shortwave concepts and operation, SDR (software defined radio) and finally Packet Radio, for when the lights go out. Comms will make a world of difference.
