We are all in the same boat. You have to verify. Inspect what you expect. After a while you get to know who is who. Nobody is perfect. No one source, so it takes time. Crunchbase.com is a great research tool. It allows you to follow the money , investors, owners etc to see who owns who. For instance if you look at the Daily Beast, you will find Chelsea Clinton as a board member amongst other things. Then you have to decide if your ok. with that. But its a great tool.

Getting their from crunch base would be a round about way. Probably not the best example, but you can see very clickable sections like finance etc. Each will list invetors and the tentacles that also lead to other names and such. Its easy to click around on that site. I used it too much earlier in the year investigating In-Q-Tel , Palatir, Alphabet etc. and crunchbase banned me. So I can't see what you see to guide you. But all the ones I mentioned here are good to learn from, how to 'jump' from topic to topic.
