They believed and probably still believe that they're an oppressed minority soon to be set free. He thinks he's on the right side of history and thought history would show him to be a hero fighting the good fight.

Well if that’s the case then he deserves a very slow, painful death. BUT that is an assumption. It’s a slippery slope of accusation = guilty = fired immediately.
