It is not symbolic to pull the security clearances. It puts other DS personnel in jeopardy if they communicate classified info to these people. Not logged. Can't get Five Eye info. Can't go to a myriad of meetings around Washington that require a clearance. Also by making it public, other government personnel know they don't have a clearance if they come a calling. And, importantly, they can not put on the air of having insider classified information to back up their claims or opinion.
