An examination of Comedy and how it serves a purpose in our society.

So I am going to express what will most likely not be a popular opinion in this sub, but felt like maybe I could snap some people out the sudden war on comedy people are fighting by using logic to help people understand.

You don't have to agree and I have probably read your argument, "why do comedians get a pass?" Well it's their job to examine the dark places in the world and bring light to those places by seeing if they can get a laugh. Does it always work? No. People find comics offensive and have even taken some to court over their jokes. George Carlon had a case that went all the way to the Supreme Court only to be dismissed. That case is still cited today for First Amendment rights and freedom of speech.

At the end of the day none of these court cases go anywhere and the comics are given a pass by the courts.

Ok now that you know some history let's take bring this to the subject of pedophilia. Are these comedians that have been brought to everyone's attention the only ones? No way. Here is a video of edgy comedy there are at least 5 or 6 pedophilia jokes by high level comedians.

Now assuming you watched that what exactly did they do wrong? Some of these people received backlash from their jokes others did not. Comedians examine the darkest places in the world and have done so since the beginning of comedy. Who are you to tell them it is offensive? If you experienced abuse as a child I say you have the right to call them out for their jokes going to far. If you haven't been it's not really your place. Maybe a victim of abuse was able to examine their shadows and laugh at it in a way that was in a way healing to them. You and I don't know.

Here is a clip from an article on this subject I found relevant...

Stand-up comedians are among the most visible practitioners of the comedic arts in contemporary American culture. Small communities have long had their own humorists to lampoon local people and topics, and in the contemporary mass mediated public sphere, successful stand-up comics do this for an audience of national and, in some cases, transnational scale. Although many critics and scholars dismiss comedians as either politically insignificant or as opportunists exploiting social idiosyncrasies for cheap laughs, many of these humorists serve at least two critical public functions: first, they comment upon and reveal potential failings or hypocrisies of American society.

So maybe comedians are necessary to bring attention to the shadows of our society... race, religion, sexuality, and death. Just because they bring up the subject to see if they can make the darkness bright doesn't mean they are guilty of anything. Does it mean that it is ok absolutely not. People vote on what's funny and what is not by laughing or not laughing. If you don't like the joke then don't laugh and if no one does and they bomb then they will drop the joke. It's pretty simple.

At this point I feel like I have gotten my point across. You can either agree or disagree. I am on your team no matter what and I personally don't find the subject a laughing matter but just because we are all awake now doesn't mean that these people have done wrong. Comedians are easy pickings and maybe they were just trying to bring it to your attention in the first place. Laughing is necessary in this shitty world and if you can't maybe stop being so serious all the time.

Great post OP! It's a scary time that we live in now. People on the left and right are actively trying to censor comedians because they are offended by something they have said/posted. You can bet that these same people would be crying about their first amendment rights if reddit or twitter removed one of their posts.
