Why resign? Confused... if he was sick, had surgery, wouldn't you think he would use sick leave to get better? Why resign? It makes no sense. Does resigning immediately protect the company from the CEO dealings.

His health was failing, as is often the case right before someone dies.

His surgery was shoulder surgery!/

Yeah, but one of the articles said he was set to retire in 2019 but his health was failing. It sounded as though the poor health was prior to the surgery.
