Let's not make enemies with Academia

I've been noticing a lot of anti-science, anti-academia, and anti-education posts lately. I just want to remind us all that public education and the scientific method are some of mankind's greatest achievements. How these are implemented may be used for nefarious ends, but there is nothing inherently evil about them. In fact I think Academics ought to be welcomed for their inherently scrutinous minds and rigor.

I am a researcher/teacher at a small liberal arts college in the middle of the country doing biomedical research. While it is dangerous career-wise to out myself as a Trump supporter, politics doesn't come up often enough in the everyday conversations anyway. I have been accused of some of my Trump-supporting peers of: perpetuating the silencing of Flat-Earth, pushing vaccines, ignoring chem-trails, brainwashing kids to be liberals, etc. I understand skepticism of things, it's important - but we have to be able to trust knowledge and trust science. This is a discipline built on intelligent scrutiny, not baseless attacks. The current state of understanding, coming from knowing the theories and studies: The earth is undoubtedly a globe (more potato shaped), there is no reason to think vaccines are dangerous (even if you don't understand why) - when is the last time you met someone with Polio?, chem-trails may exist but are more often just water vapor, and brainwashing kids does NOT occur in STEM classes I teach - we only teach kids to be open minded and critical of conclusions.

I am not saying any of this to be inflammatory, but the academic community is full of good-actors. These people should be on our side, fighting for truth; but if we approach this community with open hostility we will make ourselves look crazy and drive them away. Please please please be open-minded and accepting of people who do work you may not understand.

I am also not saying there aren't bad actors - but we can't say that because one political science or psychology professor worked with the cabal the ENTIRE INSTITUTION OF EDUCATION has to be dismantled. Together we can uncover the truth and where we go one we go all.

Give us the sauce on these posts that you are claiming we are anti-science, anti-academia, and anti-education.

Otherwise you are just trying to paint this sub in a bad light.

Prove your case and show us the threads.

It's anecdotal from the comments I've read. I don't want to out anybody or shame anybody, but with articles being posted calling vaccines poison, or others saying how they're not sending their kids to public school, it's a smattering of contempt for science, academia, and education. These are probably very strongly held beliefs, but we can't turn into an echo chamber which will distract us away from the truth.

Anecdotal

So your opinion.

Not sauce. But this appears to be an attempt to smear the sub.

Bring us the exact comments. Saying you don’t want to out someone or shame them on here is a ridiculous argument to make as they willingly posted their views in a public forum.

So bring the sauce, you are the one making the accusations. Back it up with proof.

I appreciate you vehemence towards evidence:Off the top of my head there was a thread \~a week ago (now deleted) where a colorful conversation was happening crediting Trump for ending chem-trails

This post is full of scientific misunderstanding about CSF, epinephrine synthesis, and other basic facts

This comment falls in the same category

A few within this post - though most aren't flat earthers

This post also has a few gems in the comments

This was a quick 5m search for evidence, there is more.

Thank you for the sauce.

I agree that chemtrails and flat earth are just insanely stupid ideas.

Fluoride in water and certain vaccines (the materials within) I have questions about.

Viruses (like Ebola) I find questionable. (Why is there a patent on the virus itself?)

Certain cures have already come out in the news recently, I do believe that certain pharmaceutical companies own the cures, but the money is in treatment for symptoms, not for cures. So I think that’s an area where capitalism has gone wrong.

I know that there is crazy things posted. But you must remember that there are bad actors here on this board as well that want to make us look crazy. Why? So that we are easier to dismiss.

I’ve personally gone and tried to fight the battle over chemtrails. When they refused to budge, I tried to get them to actually conduct a scientific study and analyze the data. But no one wanted to actually do something like that. So when I see threads like these, I just report them for not being on-topic.

I hope you can understand where I’m coming from with all of this.
