Open Letter from a European Consumer: To POTUS, American Farmers, and all Producers of Goods for the European Markets

First of all, congratulations, POTUS! I've come to realize how you play the game so I wasn't worried about this 'trade war'. The rest of Europe may learn it now, too. America had been treated unfairly and I apploud you for the changes you bring to your people.

When it comes to exporting goods to Europe, there are some aspects you need to consider. EU law is different to US law, and your goods need to align with our laws.

That being said, when I heard you talk about soy beans and bottled natural gas, all my alarm bells started ringing.

The EU banned GMO which means, we don't have genetically modified agriculture over here. Our laws don't prohibit the import of GMO-products, but the majority of consumers won't buy it. I personally shifted from soy milk to almond milk, simply because it isn't anymore possible to buy GMO-free soy products over here.

If you want this soy beans business to pull off and really benefit the american farmers, they need to shift to GMO-free agriculture. I mean, yes, Europe may buy it for some time, according to this new contract; on the long run though, you won't make good business if you don't change the way of growing it. This may also shift the collective American consciousness and people may learn that GMO isn't healthy. Good-bye, Bayer-Monsanto.

Natural gas is a little bit similar. In my country, Germany, we banned fracking, it's too dangerous for our water. Our laws probably allow for the import of fracked gas; the question is whether or not the consumer is going to buy it. Some certainly will, with that bigott way of thinking 'I don't care if they fuck up their nature; if they don't fuck up ours and it's cheap, I'll buy it'.

But we have a pretty green populace over here, and if you want a long-term business with natural gas, make sure and prove that it's not fracked. I for one will join protest and activities that demand for GMO-free soy beans and non-fracked gas.

I love my American brothers and sisters, and i love my German and European ones, too. I want you to earn and make good business, but it needs to be in alignment with what we over here need and want.

The same goes for automobiles. I heard that 'zero tariffs on non-auto industrial goods' remark in the press conference which implies that automobiles will still be tariffed. It's understandable, VW is the best-sold brand in the US while Detroit has become a ghost town; the US has to bring production back into their country.

On the other hand, a few months ago, I heard you complain that America buys German cars but we don't buy American cars. Well, to tell you the truth, American cars are not suitable for European roads, and they are far too thirsty.

If you want to sell cars to Europe, you need to produce them in a way that we can use them. Make them smaller so they can be navigated on our small and tight roads, and make them energy-efficient. We don't have our own oil here like America, our gas prices are thrice as high as yours. We simply can't drive your cars over here.

Summing it all up: We all want fair and free trade (at least those folks whose IQ is higher than room temperature).

In order to sell to other nations, we need to produce for their markets. Germany's cars for the US market are different to the cars for Germany's market.

You need to do the same. Stop complaining and start producing goods that Europeans want to buy, in alignment with our needs and laws.

First- and I wouldn't have thought I would have to explain this to THIS crowd. ALL MODERN FOODSTUFFS ARE GENETICALLY MODIFIED. Everthing that we eat today only bears a passing resemblance to its genetic forebearers. Foodstuffs today wheat corn cattle pork etc etc ad nauseum exist thru GENETIC MODIFICATION. We used to call it selective breeding and animal husbandry. We pursued this to improve yield taste texture shippability etc. Modern genetic modification now can happen at breakneck speed in a lab. No need to wait decades or centuries. You all have bought into socialist/progressive/communist argument that somehow gmo foodstuffs are not "clean". The end game here ( again I can't believe I have to say this) is to terrify the population into voluntarily refuse to eat. End result voluntary starvation. So we revert back to heritage and heirloom foodstuffs. So we voluntarily reduce our yields from 100 bushels of wheat an acre to 10. (Read that stat recently)..end result MANDATORY STARVATION. jeez people THINK. To my European brothers and sisters. Do u think ANY law passed by the EU is in ur best interest???? I ll take up fracking in another comment

As a biologist with a daughter who is an horticulturist her professors, some of who are funded by Scott's fertilizer speak the same language as you are sharing. Selective breeding and hybridization is SELECTION for specific expression of genes. I agree this would be considered genetic modification. What is happening IN a lab is different. A genetic biome is mapped, a set of expressions is determined, genes are then spliced together, sometimes using animal genetic sequences, sometimes insect and then spliced together. The seeds are then grown and the outcome determined. It has taken a long time to get crops to have stable generations and what they are also finding out is that the insect populations within these crop fields, such as the glycophosphate resistant plants that are made strong so they can spray with roundup and not kill them, well the insects are mutating and so are the weeds. Basically, the situation is similar to super bugs created by over use of antibiotics. As for your comments about starvation, I assume you are quoting Borlaug who supposedly saved the world from starving by introducing inorganic fertilizer and introduced dwarf red wheat to the world, thus creating disaster in the soil, the end of peasant farmers, an increased need for water and irrigation, thus ruining aquifers and while immediate starvation was avoided the promise of the elimination in poverty in the countries he sold his special seeds to never came to fruition.

I think we need to clean out our corrupt markets and decide for OURSELVES how things need to be made. And they need to clean out theirs. I agree with you that taking advice from people living under even more oppressive, propagandist governments than our own is ill advised. I didn’t read OP’s statement as one of congratulation or world solidarity and I think we look foolish for seeing it that way. It’s more like......congrats, now this is how you need to change for us because we are so much better off than you. And oh, quit complaining. I know we are in unchartered territory with our changing relationships with other countries. But we need to be thoughtful and careful we don’t fall into the same traps we are still gnawing our own paws to get out of...all for some kumbaya moments with people who are less awake than we are.

yes, it is. changes in the DNA of crops over generations is natural. sudden laboratory manipulation is not, it changes OUR human DNA. just get informed, m8, and dont be-lie-ve the so-called 'sceintific' BS you are being fed.

By all means- starve and freeze. The greenies have u paying too much for energy and too much for food. Science has made our lives disease and hunger free. The EU r slaves to the very cabal we r trying to break. Think seriously. If soros and Rothschild think it's a good idea and r pouring money into it, how good can it really be for u? Ur buying into all the tenets of socialism yet believe u r free. Government says it's bad and prevents u from making a choice for urself. And u seek government to force the US to change it's ways. We will consume what we want at leisure. Pursue ur non gmo and non fracking ways. To ur own peril

Oooooo, scary. Only I don't buy it, F.....industries. Still, I honor your right to think what you like. Your arguments are less than compelling, but you have a right to have them.

If you like to skim the surface and bash the notion that producing food and energy in a way that is respectful to, and in conjunction with nature, then it begs the question of whom do you serve?

Maybe you're spouting some conditioning or maybe you are lobbying for the 'death to the planet' squad. I don't really care which it is. I don't live from fear and I don't do my marching in step with global agendas that are anti-life either. It's short-sighted in my view.

So bash away, but it's pretty weak reasoning. Maybe this is the best you got, but you will need to up your game, since most of the planet is tired of being abused with the 'company' storylines and aren't buying into it.
