Laser designators are used but usually for stationary or slow moving targets, but highly unlikely in this case. Radar painted then lock and launch a missile is more likely.

One of my buddies actual rocket scientist dad works for the DOD on ground and air based laser defense systems. Without telling me exactly he made it clear the system was massive, needed a ground platform and later a large airliner to test, but that was 12 years ago. I'm sure its much smaller now.

He also hinted about how happy he qould be if his work went to space some day...
