but it could be used to block communications.

"In the early 1950’s a high altitude nuclear test was done over the Pacific. This created a much broader EMP pulse, which succeeded in tripping ONE (1) and I MEAN ONE circuit breaker in Honolulu that shut the street lights off on ONE street. Additionally, ONE car starter motor failure was blamed on this (but that would be quite difficult to prove, and if EMP was a real menace they should have all been blown).

The big thing the high altitude nuclear test did, (and this was significant) was that it totally erased the shortwave radio band worldwide for over 45 minutes. This was not calculated in advance and no one has figured out in direct mathematical terms why this happened, but it did happen and from this there have been subsequent calculations that theorize that any high altitude nuclear blast is likely to black out all communications which have to traverse the ionosphere for a period of up to two hours. THAT is actually important, because a nuclear weapon could indeed be used to completely black out the American military satellite communications for long periods of time (in combat terms) and cause America to lose a war. Nuclear weapons fired in sequence (10 or so a day) at the edge of space could shut all satellite communications down."
