In some of the reports posted above field strengths were estimated to be tens of thousands of volts per square meter. All you need is a tiny induced current to destroy a silicon junction. Of course this wouldn't fry everything, the reports give estimated percentages, but even 30% destruction would be cataclysmic to recover from.
