way back when I was a young thing, all rebellious and gyspy like…I had just learned a little about what we are all researching now…

I was determined to never let the normal way of life get me and to never stop traveling.

I wanted to get a tattoo to commemorate this determination.

My cliche to live by in those days was "all who wander are not lost" so

I scoured the 2003 interwebs,

which were pretty piddly compared to what we have now to find out how to translate "wander" in cantonese (classic)…

I found all of 2 webpages that both gave me the same answer…I copied it down into my journal, stylized it out with some maori swirls and headed to local tat shop.

Stoned biker guy obliged and I was super happy with it.

A couple years later I was working at a local restaurant and the owner was Chinese,

hearing so many stories about silly westerners who get Chinese tattoos only to find out later that the symbol of "peace and tranquility" actually means cabbage cock or retarded pony or something,

I showed him the tat.

He said… "Ah, yes… that does not mean wander… I do not know what top one says, but bottom one mean, BIG WAVE."

I had just started learning to surf and really leaning in to the ocean as a savior of my sanity at that time in my life so I was surprised and stoked on the synchronicity.

A few years later I was co-leading a backpacking trip of high school kids in the wilderness. One of the kids was Chinese and super duper smart and could read and speak 5 languages, cantonese was one. So I showed her and asked what it said…

She confirmed that the bottom one means, Big wave and the top one means the Dawn.

The Dawn of the Big Wave is a permanent reminder now on my body.

If this life is a surf session:

I have been on big monsters, riding the face, being chased by it's foamy mouth,

I have been held down in the darkest depths of the underworld,

unable to breathe

I have been on smooth silky sunshine reflecting rainbows of light

made turns, this way and that, up and down, only to wipeout, awkwardly

I have felt the knowing of constants, if only in an instant

searching for the union of my line and the wave

in the end,

sitting on sand,

watching the water, satisfied.
