It's apparent that gold was incredibly important to the ancients, they were mining it all over Earth.

Different civilizations that never had any contact (supposedly), all mined gold and crafted objects of significance with it.

Gold would have served very little purpose to people of ancient times.

It doesn't make any sense why they would focus so much time and energy on acquiring it, unless as a means to offer tribute to their gods, or as you say, to create items for themselves that imply authority.
