That's literally the story presented in Berserk. It's absolutely wild to me how many seemingly "way out there" ideas all seem to pop up over and over throughout human art that end up being completely true.
I'm reminded of the earliest sci-fi story, Lucian's True History, from ancient Greece, where the author is by his own admission trying his best to write something so absurd it's unbelievable.
