In my opinion this has absolutely nothing to do with personal needs!
Service to others is all about responsibiliy!

If you have to care about your children, friends, parents you can´t be selfish.

If you are a leader for your group or a whole country you can´t be selfish.
This has absolutely nothing to do with serving as a slave for the community or working 9-5 and donate everything to feed the hungry.
This is all about honor, strength, responsibility and sense of duty.
Doc told us 1 + 0 = 0
"With great power comes great responsibility."
"Give me the power and i will give it back @ We the People" = the true King.
For the common NPC it is just fine to live the credo: "Do unto others as you would do for yourself."
And trust me: If you know who you are , who you have been and who you will be - then you don´t fear death at all!

"Service to others" is not about your daily personal needs.
Balance and "Service to others" are no contradiction.
