Minix is used in academia to teach CS students how to write OSes. It is an extremely lightweight starting point that can be used to develop very powerful tools. The build found on intel chips has networking and a web server built in. It phones home and has access to to bare metal resources (read: storage, memory) which allows it to circumvent OS level security features. It is the ultimate root kit. Everything pass through it, like a firewall. It can syphon off encryption keys, password, and any other network traffic it finds. The sneaky part is since it processes all traffic, it can hide it's own tracks.

How do you execute one of the largest DDOS in the history of the internet? You activate this hidden OS on the millions of intel chips around the world. You tell it to attack a specified target. Joe User has no f'n clue it is happening, except maybe a slight performance degradation.
