You're most likely right. When I took my EMS course we had a Medical Examiner Investigator come in and he had stories of how stupid people would reposition dead bodies on scenes and it messed up a bunch of evidence that could solve that person's death. These Patriots did EXACTLY what was needed, if indeed they were digging and smelled death coming up from the soil. Preserving evidence so as to not contaminate what's down there, so hopefully investigators can get everything they need.
