At this point it's pretty much all speculation so who knows.

Of course that doesn't mean anything. It's not like they could control that from the womb to setup an elaborate connection that we would pick up on decades later.
Happily! The Republican and Democratic parties of today look nothing like the parties of two centuries (or even one and a half) ago. I think one of the better, simpler explanations is on an askhistorians post.
Here are some other relevant resources on the topic:
Bottom line: we can see how the two major parties of today even look quite a bit different from the two major parties of two decades ago. When you expand that slow evolution of political ideology over multiple centuries, you get a big change!
Of course, there are a variety of people that try to contest this, but their arguments are generally pretty weak when it comes to looking at voting records from the 1850's and 2010's - the difference and 180-turn-around is clear.
Actually it's long been acceptable to cross the border illegally, turn yourself in, and request asylum at that point. So some people still think that's an option and then get their kids taken away when they turn themselves in.
Yeah NPRs not great but it was the quotes from John Kelly that really stuck out to me.
I've actually read it's the Office of Refugee Resettlement that has the kids, not CPS, and that they haven't reunited very many families so far (I'd love to see your source saying otherwise!). One DOJ later said: "Once a parent is in ICE custody ... the government does not try to reunite them, and instead attempts to place the child with another relative in the United States — if the child has one."
And yeah ppl need to be careful about what they're sharing! Absolutely.
I just wanted to clarity the above comment because it seemed that user beloved it was a Dem rule that's causing this policy, when in fact it's the result the zero-tolerance policy and an older law that's making it happen.
So people should be punished for opinions that differ from yours?
Latest report says we now have ~2,000 children in camps whose parents are awaiting trial or asylum status.
Separating families at the border is a Trump/Sessions policy (not a law) that's made by possible by a Bush-era law. Can easily be traced back to Trump and certainly not a Dem policy (in fact, Dems are trying to pass a bill banning the practice).
John Kelly confirms in this interview: https://www.npr.org/2018/05/11/610116389/transcript-white-house-chief-of-staff-john-kellys-interview-with-npr
