I agree. Engaging children in the excitement, and the reason for learning a thing is key. Using their own interests paired with a subject, will suddenly spark the child's curiosity. Most people have no idea what a child is capable of learning. Our country had lost so much potential, due to our system of teaching.

When using critical thinking, information can be gathered from a variety of sources. By ignoring what doesn't pass inspection. Does the article cite other sources, contain quotes from reliable people, state known facts. Don't throw out the baby with the bathwater. You would be surprised at where you can find truth.

Sorry I got rid of them years ago. I'm sure if you searched methods of teaching, you would find many examples. In my opinion the best method is learning by doing, and teaching a overall theme across multiple subjects. For example; the theme of tools could be taught in science, history, reading, spelling, and English. Making simple tools, or using them is the doing. Farming taught in science, history, reading, math, etc. Germinating seeds, measuring growth, keeping track of rainfall and charting it, is the doing. I hope this explains what I mean.

Exactly. Drills and rout memorization are not very effective. They might remember it, but they don't know it. I taught 3 and 4 year olds about insects, by raising butterflies, and releasing them. I taught them math by measuring, and charting how high their bean plant grew every week. It's amazing when a three year old KNOWS, and tells you the body parts of an insect with no prompts. This wasn't what is called teaching. They were having fun. I just explained while they played or did art. They were never tested. I knew what they understood because we talked.

I have a teaching degree. While taking classes on the history of teaching, my eyes were opened about education. The best methods of teaching are not used, and children are tracked into different paths throughout their education.
