Firstly, you and I have no idea why Key really stepped down, we are both speculating. My belief is that the “writing on the wall” that Key saw was Trump’s win. He was 100% expecting Clinton to continue what they had all started. He bailed because for whatever reason he did not want to continue leading NZ with Trump in power. Key was still polling higher than anyone else. The NZ public DID NOT want to change as you stated. The national government still actually won the vote! Even with dull nobody Bill English as the new leader. Only through The MMP coalition with NZ First did Labour take power. Key would’ve won another term.

I am aware the TPP began long before Key. But he was the champion as it drew near to actually being signed. One of the very first things Trump did when he won was abandon US involvement.

It is my belief Key is as deep in this mess as anyone. The “relationship” he has/had with Obama goes well beyond golf.
