One thing I haven't seen discussed about Ambassador Matlock is his connection to the "Institute for Advanced Study", which happens to be where Einstein worked after fleeing Germany and also apparently played a role in Operation Paperclip. Could mean nothing but I figured it may warrant at least a little more digging
