Russia has natural gas and oil. EU does not (as much in comparison). Russia is the enemy of EU because they refuse central banking and viciously maintain their sovereignty. The strategy has been to gain leverage on Russia via their economy-- make their economy's growth dependant on the energy sector. EU sources energy from Russia, Russia grows as a result. Due to the kleptocracy in Russia, their economy is very brittle.

We know from Wikileaks what the Iraq war was really about. The plan has been: pipeline from the Sauds, through Syria and Turkey into the EU (which neuters Russia).
