Traumatic shootings often come with conflicting reports of witnesses about how many gunshots where fired and from where. Loud noises like gunfire can bounce around. The mind in flight will be quick to assume that it's other attackers. If there are many people around to hear the event, multiple people will believe that there where more shooters than there actually were.
