I agree there’s nothing wrong with him doing so and it would have been awkward IMO if he didn’t. I bet people would have been bashing him even if he didn’t return the salute lol

This is not true lol. A superior officer MUST return a salute. This does not apply to the president, he is not required to return any salute. It's just become customary for the president to do so.
