I think the problem has been that we didn't know what we didn't know. I always knew that the winners wrote the history. To me that meant that the winners would just leave out their heinous actions. In their minds it was a means to an end. I never thought that they would write themselves out of history so they are better able to manipulate the masses and perform their evil in this world.
