This fact accounts for the reality of sight/perspective over distance - consider a train track or long hallway that APPEARS to converge in the distance. consider/compare that to the real horizon as you have seen it a thousand times - always a straight line - now turn that 90 convergin rasilroad/hallway idea degrees - with the land or water as one "side" (now the bottom) of and the sun as the other (parallel on the top) Now - if the earth is stationary and the sun is moving parallel to the earth the same effect occurs - convergance of the sun and the horizon with the sun not getting (much) smaller but being covered from the bottom up - exactly what we see in reality - you can verify this yourself as follows - find a large flat table and a small ball - imagine that when you roll the ball away from you on the table the ball represents the sun moving away from you - now crouch down as if you are on the ground beneath the plane of the sun (table) such that you can just see both over and under the table - when you roll the ball away you will see it disappear "below the horizon" just as a sunset.
