It's an early 3D platformer, and it shows with its awkward camera and controls, platforming glitches, crappy level design, and bad performance. Some of the boss fights are pretty obnoxious too, especially the final ones, most of them have long invincibility states that don't make sense. The epitome of awfulness is the castle center for having a long tedious fetchquest to blow up a broken wall, including the trek where you have to get nitro to it without jumping, falling, or getting hit. Then when you get it there you find out the wall is magically protected and you have to find some obscure method to break the seal, and of course, do the nitro fetchquest again. Also until you get used to it there's certain foibles in the controls, like the way you can dodge hop by pressing stick and jump, which usually serves to ruin an attempted jump over a pit.

Legacy of Darkness improves certain parts over the original, mostly in the level design (compare the clock tower in particular), and adding a new intro stage, but it also locks the original duo (Carrie!) behind finding secret items in Henry's story, who (except in Japanese versions) is locked behind beating Cornell's story.

If you decide to give it a try, avoid Reinhardt. He doesn't play all that well in 3D. The other 3 are a lot more manageable.
