That reminds me of something humorous I found out years ago when I was playing SSBM. Often times when I wanted something mind numbing, I'd turn on stock, set it to 99, set the time limit to 99 minutes, and turn all of the opposing characters up to level 9. Those were perhaps the most fun times I had with the game, and I just ended up winning about half the time due to button mashing and just happening to be the one who was K.O.ed the least. If the game journos were to be put up to the same challenge would they even be able to have fun before they started complaining about shit being "Too hard". I should also mention that Middle School me unlocked all of the characters and completed All-Star mode. However, I didn't unlock anything else but the standard unlock stages (So, no Final Destination or 'SSB64 stages).
