I think the mystery variable/factor is x.
Just a hunch. Here's why.

x+n square
Find the right n, find the right x, find a and b, problem solved.
So (n-1) and f and e give us clues to what values of x work with each n iteration.
Plus it's just very cool if X marks the spot.
