How to make animated GIF using gimp.
The tutorials on the web are shit. I mean really, really complex and tedious, for something that is incredibly easy.
Save dozens of steps by doing it my way, the easy way.
How to.
Drag one image onto the GIMP canvas.
Now drag additional frames you want to use, one by one, as layers.
Select ~~Save~~ Export as, GIF.
In the ~~Save~~ Export as dialog, set the delay you want per frame.
That's it.
If you want to vary the delay, edit the layer properties and specify a different time interval in milliseconds (ms) in parentheses.
If you want to reorder the layers (frames), just grab a layer and move it to a different position in the stack.
Couldn't be simpler.
If the layers are different sizes, you will need to make them the same size and shape. Use Scale Layer tool.
But if you start with a bunch of still images (frames) all the same size and shape, this will not be needed.
Test how it looks by playing it in your File Manager. Make sure the first frame is the one you want to appear if people see a still image of your gif. Reorder layers if it isn't.
I am not persuaded that anybody wants to capture still frames from an animation. To my mind, the purpose of an animation is to display several frames in sequence.
An animation designed to be very slow for capturing frames would be unusual for other purposes.
And vice versa.
If you want the original image in its original resolution, don't get it from an animation, get it from the Meme Warehouse.

Yeah, I played with it all day. It's a little balky but gimp has animation plugins that can create fades. Yes, you can set the timing manually if you want variable delays. Animation is so much moar trouble than still.
Doing some damage control with an image database that I managed to crash non-recoverably today. Learned that I need to maintain the Meme Warehouse files as is, without changing file sizes or datestamps, so others don't have to download. Modifying metadata written into the image files is a no-no in this respect.
Didn't lose any data, just fucked up the image timestamps on my local storage.
