The Forgotten soldier is one of the best and worst books ever to be written about modern conflict, true to its title, its about Guy and his mates (french volunteers fighting on the eastern front) being forgotten in the ensuing collapse of the german lines and the titanic effort Guy and the rest of the Wehrmacht in stemming the tide of bolsheviks as they fought to save as many civilians as possible.
And even then, that last paragraph doesnt even begin to describe the hardships Guy suffered on the eastern front, the fact that he took part in the eastern front from start to finish is testament alone to human will.
Read the book, then buy it so Guy gets a few shekels, the poor bastard at least deserves that.
