Rep. Cori Bush's car was struck by gunfire while parked in the St. Louis area over the weekend, her office said Thursday.

Bush, D-Mo., was not in the car and was not injured in the Saturday morning incident, her office said, adding that they did not believe the progressive congresswoman and longtime activist was intentionally targeted.

In a statement, Bush, who is Missouri's first Black congresswoman, said the incident had left her shaken.

“Like far too many of us in St. Louis, experiencing gun violence is all too familiar," Bush said. "Thankfully no one was harmed. But any act of gun violence shakes your soul.

"No one should have to fear for their safety here in St. Louis, and that is exactly why our movement is working every day to invest in our communities, eradicate the root causes of gun violence, and keep every neighborhood safe,” she said.

The statement did not specify where exactly the car was at the time, including whether it was in St. Louis proper. A spokesperson for the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department said it didn't have a record of an incident matching Bush's description in its jurisdiction.

It's not the first time Bush has reported having her car shot. She tweeted out pictures of her bullet-damaged car while she was running for office in June 2020.

"My car took the bullets. I am safe," said then.

The latest incident comes a month after another Democratic congresswoman, Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, D-Pa., was carjacked at gunpoint in a park in Philadelphia. Scanlon was not injured. Her car was later recovered and police arrested five suspects.

US Announces New Open Registry

John Konrad

January 27, 2022

Next Tuesday at the National Press Club in Washington, former US Deputy Secretary of State and the first Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte will be providing opening remarks, and Albert Bryan, Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands, will announce a new US Flag open ship registry, in what some maritime experts are calling the most historic moment for US maritime interests this century.

The shipping industry moves more than $4 trillion USD of imports and exports into and out of the United States every year but, for the past fifty years, the U.S. has increasingly relied on shipping lines from other countries to carry most of these goods. Currently, there is only one U.S. flag shipping company in the top 30: Matson, ranked 26th, with only 0.2% of the global market share.

Over fifty percent of the ships that traverse international waterways are registered in just three jurisdictions – Panama, Liberia, and the Marshall Islands. Each of these registries was formed with the support of the US Government and each originally promised commercial advantages along with some degree of protection from the US Navy. Panama and Liberia, however, currently have no protection agreement in place. The Marshall Islands registry is said to have a security “understanding” with the United States, but the details of which are not clear.

According to a white paper released by the Center for Ocean Policy and Economics (COPE) at the Northeast Maritime Institute, ships registered under the new Virgin Islands Flag will realize physical and cyber protection from relevant US agencies and the new flag will also provide a key competitive advantage to ship owners.

“The future is becoming increasingly complex and uncertain,” said Eric R. Dawicki President of Northeast Maritime Institute and an executive member of COPE, in an interview with gCaptain. “We believe that customers, ports, financial markets, and insurance companies are ready to reward ship owners that are more transparent and lean into environmental, social, and corporate governance (ESG). We believe a US open registry will protect the rights of seafarers and provide US mariners with more opportunities.”

Dawicki was quick to point out that, while this is an open registry, it will not be a flag of convenience. The US Virgin Islands is one of only five official Overseas Territories of the United States. American Virgin Islanders are American Citizens and USVI companies are subject to United States law. The new registry hopes to attract ship owners that understand this and are willing to lean into ESG initiatives.

“We are looking to help shipowners navigate an increasingly uncertain world,” said Dawicki. “We are looking to help those who want to do good by doing well.”

An increasing number of customers, financial institutions, and regulators are looking to do business with companies that hold themselves to a higher standard. Less clear is if ship owners will be willing to ditch cheap flags of convenience for better access to capital and cargo. It is also unclear how the USVI flag will navigate the Jones Act, if it will have a separate seat at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) or share one with the US delegation, and the depth of its relationship with classification societies, regulators at the US Coast Guard, the US Navy, and shipowner groups like ICS, BIMCO, INTERTANKO, and INTERCAGO… which have all been calling for higher standards within the broader industry.

While these questions remain unanswered, representatives of the new flag state promise transparency and promise to answer these difficult questions at the press event next Tuesday.

U.S. Department of Energy Announces $25 Million for Wave Energy Research Off Oregon Coast

Mike Schuler

January 27, 2022

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) has announced $25 million in funding to support research and development of commercially-viable renewable wave power technology.

The funding will support eight projects that will make up the first round of open-water testing at the PacWave South test site, located off the Oregon coast, with the goal of accelerating the commercial viability of wave energy technology and deploying it at scale to help decarbonize the power grid.

“Harnessing the unrelenting power of the ocean is a clean, innovative, and sustainable way to curtail carbon pollution — benefitting American businesses and families, especially coastal communities hit hardest by the impacts of climate change,” said U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm. “Diversifying and expanding our clean energy sources will usher in a new era of energy independence that makes the grid more resilient, curbs the climate crisis, and saves Americans money on their energy bills.”

The funding comes as President Biden has set a goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Wave energy converters, which capture and convert natural wave energy into carbon-free electricity, require testing in realistic conditions to be deployed at scale, but obstacles such as permitting challenges and a scarcity of available test sites has made open-water testing, at least in the United States, a challenge.

In 2016, DOE partnered with Oregon State University to build the PacWave South test facility, a proposed $80 million open ocean wave energy test center to be located about six nautical miles off Newport, Oregon. The project was issued its research lease by the Department of Interior’s Bureau of Ocean Energy Management in February 2021, making it the nation’s first accredited, grid-connected, pre-permitted, open-water wave energy test facility approved in federal waters. The area, which will span approximately 1,696 acres or 2.65 square miles, will consist of four test berths to support the testing of up to 20 wave energy converter (WEC) devices, with an installed capacity of up 20 megawatts.

“Wave energy is an essential piece of the strategy to combat the climate crisis, and I’m gratified that Oregon State University, Portland State University and our state will play a central role in developing this energy source to its full potential,” said U.S. Senator Ron Wyden (OR). “I look forward very much to what the innovative minds at both OSU and PSU as well as elsewhere develop with these projects that put our country on the path to a clean energy future.”

DOJ greenlights use of grant funds to bolster security for election workers

The Justice Department on Wednesday told state officials across the country they can use federal grant money to help protect election workers from a growing number of threats following the 2020 election.

A letter to state administrators of a law enforcement grant program said the funds could be used “to deter, detect, and protect against threats of violence against election workers, administrators, officials, and others associated with the electoral process.”

The Justice Assistance Grant program that will distribute the funds is more commonly used for a wide variety of criminal justice matters, but acting Bureau of Justice Assistance Director Kristen Mahoney said the money “may be used to prevent and respond to violent threats of this kind.”

The rising number of threats against election officials has been a priority for attorney general Merrick Garland, who in June wrote a memo to federal prosecutors directing them to more aggressively prosecute those making threats against election administrators.

Louisiana Decides to Suspend Use of Soros-Funded Voter Roll Clean-Up Sytem – ERIC

Over the past week, we released a three-part series on a corrupt Soros Open Society founded and funded voter roll clean-up system named ERIC.

The ERIC system is not performing as is advertised. In several states the ERIC system has not cleaned up voter rolls

The largest US counties removed only zero to two ineligible voters from their voter rolls in the last 4 years. This is fraud. The ERIC system is a sham. Democrats know this and that is why they use the ERIC system.

On Thursday Louisiana announced that they will no longer use the ERIC system. It is a broken application.

Today the state of Louisiana said no more – they will stop using this scandalous system.

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin has announced that Louisiana will suspend its participation in the Electronic Registration Information Center (ERIC), effective immediately. The announcement comes amid concerns raised by citizens, government watchdog organizations and media reports about potential questionable funding sources and that possibly partisan actors may have access to ERIC network data for political purposes, potentially undermining voter confidence.
