Yellen Confirmation Hearing for Treasury Is Planned for Jan. 19
Janet Yellen’s confirmation hearing as Treasury secretary is planned for Jan. 19 in front of the Senate Finance Committee, the day before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn into office, people familiar with the matter said.
Yellen, a former chair of the Federal Reserve, is expected to win confirmation easily in the Senate. While she occasionally sparred with Republican lawmakers during her tenure at the Fed, some GOP senators have already said they support her nomination. In Yellen, Biden will have a battle-tested policy maker who can draw on decades of experience at the Fed to help rebuild an economy in dire need of government cash and confidence. Biden has called for trillions of dollars in new stimulus, including aid to small and mid-size businesses that are the nation’s jobs engine.
Yellen is likely to be one of the first Biden cabinet picks to be confirmed, if the Senate isn’t embroiled in an impeachment trial for Donald Trump, whose presidency ends Jan. 20. A Biden transition spokesperson did not immediately reply to request for comment. Senate Finance Committee spokesman Taylor Foy declined to comment.
The U.S. economy is showing signs of further erosion as some states shutter businesses again in a bid to slow the resurgent spread of coronavirus. The U.S. outbreak has posed a drag on the nascent labor-market recovery, with jobless claims ticking up and payrolls dropping last month.
Yellen is expected to champion what she has called “extraordinary fiscal support” to help the economy – deficit spending that she says is affordable given extraordinarily low interest rates.
If confirmed by the Senate, Yellen, 74, will be the first woman to serve as Treasury chief and the oldest to hold that job in recent history. In 2014, she was confirmed as the first woman to chair the Fed.
Among her first tasks will be deciding on what to do about the Fed’s pandemic lending programs after outgoing Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin ordered untapped government funds to be returned. She may try to extend the programs, which is the Fed’s preference, or redesign them since many of the funds weren’t used.

Sheldon Adelson, billionaire Trump backer and Las Vegas Sands CEO, dead at 87
Adelson entered the casino business in 1989
Sheldon Adelson, the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Las Vegas Sands Corp., has died following a battle with cancer. He was 87.
Adelson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2019 and recently stepped away from the company to resume his treatment, the company said on Jan. 7.
"Mr. Adelson was the first employee of Las Vegas Sands – "Team Member Number One" he liked to say. Today, more than 50,000 Sands team members have Dr. Adelson and the entire Adelson family in their thoughts and prayers and are grateful to have had their lives touched by a true force of nature," according to a statement from Las Vegas Sands.
Adelson has been a longtime donor to the Republican Party, giving more than $430 million to conservatives during the 2020 campaign. He was an early and longtime supporter of President Trump during his initial run for the White House.
"Laura and I mourn the passing of a friend," former President George W. Bush said in a statement. "He was an American patriot and a strong supporter of Israel. Sheldon was a generous benefactor of charitable causes, especially medical research and Jewish heritage education. He will be missed by many - none more than his beloved family."
Adelson, who is survived by his wife Dr. Miriam Adelson and five children, had a net worth of $35.6 billion as of Jan. 11, according to Forbes.
A funeral will be held in Israel, the birthplace of Miriam Adelson, with plans for a memorial service held in Las Vegas to be announced at a later date, according to the company.

Oil hit an 11-month high just below $57 a barrel on Tuesday, bolstered by Saudi Arabia’s plans to limit supply, offsetting worries that rising coronavirus cases globally would curtail fuel demand. Brent crude was up 90 cents, or 1.6%, at $56.56 a barrel by 1118 EST (1618 GMT) after touching its highest since last February at $56.75. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) gained 82 cents, or 1.6%, to $53.07.
Saudi Arabia plans to cut output by an extra 1 million barrels per day (bpd) in February and March to keep inventories in check.
The Saudi cut is part of an OPEC-led deal in which most producers will hold output steady in February. Last year’s record cuts from OPEC and its allies helped oil recover from historic lows reached in April. Some analysts believe the oil complex is underestimating supply levels.
“Storage at Cushing is only 10.2 million barrels below the all-time record high, so there is no problem with supply here in the U.S., but the complex is responding positively to this chatter about undersupply,” said Bob Yawger, director of energy futures at Mizuho.
Oil also gained on expectations for a drop in U.S. crude stockpiles. Analysts expect crude inventories to fall by 2.7 million barrels for a fifth straight week of declines.
The first of this week’s two supply reports, from the American Petroleum Institute, is due at 4:30 p.m. EST (2130 GMT).
The market is also being supported by the prospect of increased economic stimulus in the United States. President-elect Joe Biden, who takes office on Jan. 20, has promised “trillions” in extra pandemic-relief spending.
However, oil price gains were capped by demand concerns as coronavirus cases rise around the world.

250,000 Small British Businesses Expected to Be Destroyed by Coronavirus Lockdowns This Year
The coronavirus lockdowns implemented by the British government will force at least a quarter of a million small businesses to shut down for good if they are not bailed out by the taxpayer, business leaders have predicted.
Over the next year, at least 250,000 are expected to go under, according to a survey conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
The number of firms saying that they are on the brink of collapse is the highest since the beginning of the economic crisis caused by the Chinese coronavirus and the ensuing draconian restrictions foisted upon the public.
The figures do not represent the number of businesses which are hoping to avoid collapse by freezing their operations, laying off staff, or taking on significant debt in order to stay afloat.
Of those surveyed, 23 per cent of small businesses have reduced the number of employees in the last quarter, alone, representing a ten per cent rise over the beginning of last year.
Some 14 per cent of small businesses reported that they will be forced to slash the number of people they employ over the next three months.
The number of small firms predicting that they will see their profitability decline over the next quarter has also reached an all-time high, with 58 per cent fearing profits will go down.

The national chairman of the Federation of Small Businesses, Mike Cherry, said: “The development of business support measures has not kept pace with intensifying restrictions. As a result, we risk losing hundreds of thousands of great, ultimately viable small businesses this year, at huge cost to local communities and individual livelihoods.
“A record number say they plan to close over the next 12 months, and they were saying that even before news of the latest lockdown came through.”
“There are meaningful lifelines for retail, leisure and hospitality businesses, which are very welcome as far as they go. But this Government needs to realise that the small business community is much bigger than these three sectors,” Cherry added.
“This Government can stem losses and protect the businesses of the future, but only if it acts now,” the FSB chairman concluded.

The dire warnings from small business come as the latest national lockdown imposed by Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to plunge millions of workers back into furlough schemes.
Coming almost entirely at taxpayer expense, the furlough programme has already cost the UK Treasury over £46 billion and is expected to only grow higher.
The Institute for Employment Studies (IES) predicted that the closing of schools could result in five to six million people being forced into taking the government handouts to survive, up from three million at the end of the year.
In an interview with Breitbart London in October, a British businesswoman said that she “100 per cent” blamed the government for her business collapsing, saying that the lockdown “killed” her business and made her lose “everything I have”.
“It’s killing the economy, it’s killing people, stopping people being able to visit people in hospitals, in care homes, it’s damaging every aspect of life,” she decried.

John Matze, who launched the app in August 2018 as an alternative to Twitter, said that he was being destroyed by the tech giants.
'People are threatening my life,' he said. 'I can't go home tonight.
'So this is really a lot, you know. This is not just our civil liberties. [Big Tech] can shut down a billion-dollar company, half-a-billion dollar company overnight.'

Aid Groups Sound the Alarm Over Houthi Terror Designation
The designation will hamper aid deliveries to Houthi-controlled areas where 70% of Yemen's food-insecure population lives
Since Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced the Trump administration’s intention to designate Yemen’s Houthis as a foreign terrorist organization on Sunday, aid organizations have been warning of the grave consequences the move will have on Yemen’s food-insecure population.
The US-backed Saudi-led war on Yemen has left Yemen’s civilian population almost completely reliant on aid. According to UN numbers, around 80 percent of Yemenis rely on aid, and 13.5 million people face acute food insecurity.
The terror designation will hamper the efforts of international charities that deliver food to Houthi-controlled areas, where 70 percent of Yemen’s population lives and malnutrition is the most widespread.
Aid agencies fear their work in north Yemen will now be criminalized since the Houthis are the authority they have to deal with and make transactions with. US terror designations open up sanctions on any individuals or entities that do business with those Washington brands as terrorists.
Pompeo said exemptions would be made for humanitarian goods. But any additional roadblocks for aid agencies will cause more suffering in Yemen since the situation is so dire. “Even with exemptions, the operation will be compromised,” said Janti Soeripto, the president of Save the Children, according to AP News.
Lawmakers in Congress from both sides of the aisle are pushing back on the designation. According to Foreign Policy, congressional staffers snapped at the Trump administration’s State Department during a phone call on Monday morning.
Both Republican and Democratic staffers were angered by the fact that the Trump administration did not consult with Congress over the designation. “You need to stop f**king lying to Congress,” one staffer said, according to sources speaking to Foreign Policy.
The designation is set to take effect on January 19th, President Trump’s last day in office and one day before Joe Biden’s inauguration. Aid agencies and members of Congress are urging the Biden administration to reverse the move as quickly as possible.
While the UN has not officially declared a famine in Yemen, mass starvation in the country has been ongoing for years. In 2018, Save the Children published a report that said as many as 85,000 children under the age of five died of starvation in Yemen between April 2015 and October 2018.
Since 2015, the US-backed Saudi-led coalition in Yemen has regularly targeted civilian infrastructure, including farms, fishing boats, market places, schools, hospitals, water treatment facilities, and civilian homes. Despite this pattern of indiscriminate bombing, the US continues to arm and support the coalition.
Before the Saudis intervened in Yemen, the Houthis were an intelligence-sharing partner with the US in the fight against al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula. A report from The Wall Street Journal in January 2015 (the Saudi intervention started in March 2015) explained how the US was cooperating with the Houthis.
The report reads: “The US has formed ties with Houthi rebels who seized control of Yemen’s capital, White House officials and rebel commanders said, in the clearest indication of a shift in the US approach there as it seeks to maintain its fight against a key branch of al Qaeda.”

Today, President Trump is issuing an Executive Order on Promoting Small Modular Reactors for National Defense and Space Exploration, which will further revitalize the United States nuclear energy sector, reinvigorate America’s space exploration program, and produce diverse energy options for national defense needs.
The United States has used transportable nuclear reactors for nearly 70 years for functions like propelling aircraft carriers through the sea and enabling submarines to stay underwater for long periods of time. Using small modular reactors for national defense and space exploration will allow the United States to maintain and advance our leadership and dominance across space and terrestrial domains.
Small modular reactors have the potential to enhance energy flexibility and energy security at domestic military installations in remote locations. At President Trump’s direction, the Department of Defense will establish and implement a plan to demonstrate the energy flexibility and cost effectiveness of a small modular reactor at a domestic military installation, and will pilot a transportable small modular reactor for a mission other than naval propulsion for the first time in half a century.
Nuclear power sources are essential to deep space exploration, where solar power is not practical. The sustainable exploration of the Moon, Mars, and other locations will be enhanced by small modular reactors deployed from Earth for operations across the solar system. NASA will explore the use of nuclear energy systems for human and robotic exploration missions through 2040. As the United States develops new technology, we will continue to adhere to the highest standards for nuclear nonproliferation and safety.
