A Handful of Penny Stocks Just Made Up a Fifth of U.S. Volume

 

For a stark illustration of how dominant individual investors have become in U.S. equities, check out the proportion of volume happening in the tiniest stocks.

 

While it’s not unheard of to see a microcap like pet-medicine maker Zomedica Corp. top the most-active list with a billion shares traded, as it did Monday, it is notable when it and five other companies selling for less than $1 make up almost a fifth of overall volume. That also occurred yesterday, data compiled by Themis Trading LLC’s Joseph Saluzzi show.

 

Hand-over-fist buying by retail day traders, a hallmark of markets for a better part of the past six months, is sending volume skyward both on major exchanges and elsewhere. One way of seeing the impact retail traders have on volume is to compare it at places like NYSE and Nasdaq with that on broker-operated venues, where orders from apps like Robinhood are often steered. Trading on the latter exceeded the former last month for the first time since at least 2008, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

 

“I thought it was pretty odd,” said Saluzzi, co-head of equity trading at Themis Trading. “I’ve been around for a long time, I’ve seen people in chat rooms and retail investors saying ‘we can make some money - it’s easy.’ There’s a risk it may not end well.”

 

Share volume, elevated for months, spiked anew last week, when an average 14.8 billion shares changed hands on U.S. venues, ranking among the busiest stretches of all time. Only three weeks in March of last year and two during the financial crisis witnessed higher share turnover, data compiled by Bloomberg show.

 

For now, for the people making the trades, it’s working. The cheaper a company’s share price, the better its performance has been. On average, Russell 3000 stocks with price tags below $2 a share have surged almost 13% so far in 2021. Those with share prices below $5 are up close to 10%. That’s more than three times the gain experienced by stocks with share prices above $100.

 

Half a billion shares of Zomedica changed hands before noon on Tuesday, with turnover on track for another record after more than 1 billion shares traded on Monday. Tonix Pharmaceuticals Holding Corp., which develops therapies for disorders of the central nervous system, saw its trading volume on Monday spike to 12 times its 2020 average. Sundial Growers Inc., another penny stock that was among the most active on Monday, saw its turnover jump nine-fold from its average last year. All told, traders in these stocks, along with Acasti Pharma Inc., BioNano Genomics Inc. and a few others, traded 2.6 billion shares on Monday, almost one-fifth of the entire trading that day.

Corruption, 10 Leonardo managers and two Google companies investigated

Milan, 12 January 2021 - The soldiers of the economic-financial police unit of the Milan Finance Police have acquired documents in the Leonardo offices in Rome and Pomigliano d'Arco (Naples) as part of an investigation by the prosecutor Gaetano Ruta for money laundering, tax crimes and corruption between private individuals . The latter is an offense for which ten managers of the group are responsible , who are an offended party.

 

Google Ireland and Google Payments are also investigated in the investigation , which involves a total of 14 individuals and three legal entities . According to what has been reconstructed, an Italian company that deals with electronics and hardware for the aerospace and military sector would have played the part of the corruptor against the 10 managers of Leonardo. Four managers of the company under investigation for offering "gifts and compensation" to the 10 executives of Leonardo in order to obtain contracts. Based on the investigative reconstruction, iblack funds were 'distracted' from the real orders paid by Leonardo to the company and transferred to tax havens , and thus made to disappear.

 

At least 6 million were identified by the yellow flames, because they left Italy to foreign countries in 6 years, from 2012 to 2018. The investigation, which concerns a total of fourteen individuals, including 10 employees of Leonardo who are under investigation, and three legal entities, would have brought to light a system of payments by a supplier company, Transpart, to the group of employees, to favor obtaining orders. The top management of Transpart would have created black funds abroad, the result of tax evasion, used precisely to pay bribes and gifts to people who within Leonardo had the possibility to modify the procurement procedures, adapting them to the needs of the holding.

 

The money, around six million euros between 2012 and 2018, would be transferred to offshore companies in Panama, England and Ireland. Part of the money - about 400 thousand that traced - would have returned to Italy via the Google pay platform. Hence the involvement in the investigation of the Google companies which, as we learn from the documents, would have allowed "the transfer of sums of money deriving from tax fraud, hindering the identification of the criminal origin".

Sonic boom heard over East of England as RAF intercepts civilian plane

 

A sonic boom has been heard across the East of England after RAF Typhoon aircraft were launched to intercept a plane that had lost communications.

 

The Typhoons took off from RAF Coningsby and "safely escorted" the civilian aircraft to Stansted Airport in Essex, an RAF spokesman said.

 

The boom, at about 13:05 GMT, was reported by people across social media.

 

"The Typhoon aircraft were authorised to transit at supersonic speed for operational reasons," the RAF said.

People in Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire and parts of London heard the boom.

 

"We have received numerous calls from the public with reports of a sonic boom… between Huntingdon and Cambridge," Cambridgeshire police said, in a Facebook post.

 

"Nobody has been injured. Some callers reported the incident had shaken properties but no major damage is thought to have occurred."

 

Communications with the aircraft were re-established after the Typhoons were launched and it was intercepted before being escorted to Stansted.

 

A spokesman for the airport said the "private jet" was believed to have been flying from Germany to Birmingham.

 

He confirmed the plane had been brought into land at about 13:40.
