Cuomo Faces Revolt as Legislators Move to Strip Him of Pandemic Powers

Democratic lawmakers have begun to challenge Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s handling of virus-related nursing home deaths, and the governor also faces a federal inquiry.

Feb. 17, 2021

ALBANY, N.Y. — The Democratic leaders of the New York State Senate are moving to strip Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo of unilateral emergency powers granted during the pandemic, setting up a remarkable rebuke for the governor from members of his own party.

The Senate’s measures, which could be voted on as soon as next week, underscore the deepening division between Mr. Cuomo and state lawmakers since the governor admitted to intentionally withholding critical data on virus-related deaths from the Legislature.

The moves came even as it emerged that the F.B.I. and the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York had opened an inquiry into the Cuomo administration’s handling of nursing homes during the pandemic. It was not known whether the inquiry, which was confirmed by three people familiar with the matter, was focused on Mr. Cuomo or any individual, only that it was in its earliest stages.

The inquiry was another clear indication of how the climate has shifted dramatically for Mr. Cuomo since March, when he emerged as a prominent voice in the health crisis, using his daily briefings and invocations of his family to inform and calm a nation of viewers who turned to him as the virus began to spread. Now, much of that good will has evaporated.

Cuomo, Dem lawmakers brawl after proposal to strip emergency powers

Albany, NY (WHAM) - Political pressure is boiling in Albany one day after a downstate Assembly member called on his colleagues to formally rescind the governor's emergency executive powers.

"If the governor does not come clean and act in an honest way and own up to the mistakes and corrects all the mistakes he’s made for the last ten months and be transparent and honest about what he did, then we reached a point where we know he was hiding information for political gain," said Assemblyman Ron Kim, who wrote the letter to the Assembly.

Kim has been critical of the governor after a recent report exposed one of the governor's aides admitting the administration withheld the true number of nursing home deaths in order to avoid a potential federal investigation.

"It’s clear to me and a few select members, the governor is trying to rope us in into his bigger coverup with what happened with nursing home deaths," said Kim. "I refuse to cross that line, I refuse to cover up the cover up."

Cuomo has defended the state's counting process of COVID-related nursing home deaths several times.

Wednesday, Cuomo lashed out at Kim during a conference call with media.

"He attacked me," said Cuomo. "He attacked me and said that I obstructed justice in a letter today." Cuomo then accused Kim of past corruption and of being a liar.

"These are serious accusations, so yes I'm going to correct them, because they are personal attacks," he added.

A report by CNN published Wednesday alleges Kim was told by the governor that his political career would be destroyed if he didn't fall in line with the administration's handling of COVID and nursing homes.

Cuomo's office has denied those were words were said.

Local Democratic lawmakers who called for Cuomo's emergency executive powers to be removed after the NY Post report last week are sticking by their words.

"The news articles, and the tweets, and the posts over the past several days have only confirmed what we already knew: we have to do things differently in New York," said State Sen. Jeremy Cooney (D-Rochester).

Cooney said he supported the governor's handling of the pandemic early on, yet the first-term senator says change is now needed.

"I wasn’t in the room at that point, but I’m in the room now, and what I’m hearing is that things are not working as well as they could," he said. "There’s always room for improvement."

Assemblymember Jen Lunsford (D-135th Assembly District) said she still supports the governor losing his emergency powers.

“When the Governor was first afforded extraordinary emergency powers it was because we needed someone with the authority to make quick, agile responses to a dangerous and unknown situation," she said. "I believe we have passed the point where we require that kind of flexibility and speed in decision making. The governor no longer needs these emergency powers to effectively respond to the COVID-19 crisis. We need to return the power to the legislature.”

Assemblymember Sarah Clark (D- 136th Assembly District) said: "There has been much discussion the last few days regarding the governor's emergency powers. While it made sense for the governor to have these powers last year to make critical split second decisions as the pandemic was unfolding, it's fair to say that we now have a better understanding of what is needed to manage our recovery statewide. For that reason, I believe it makes sense to reinstate the checks and balances in our state government, and end the Governor's emergency powers."

State Sen. Samra Brouk, also called for the governor's powers to be removed….

Russia Blasts Biden Regime For ‘Persecution’ Of Trump Supporters, Political Dissidents

Russia calls on the United States to observe the human rights of political opponents.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement lambasting the United States government under Joe Biden for the “ongoing persecution campaign” taking place “against anybody at all who does not agree with the results of the latest presidential election.”

In the statement, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova delivered a scathing assessment of the human rights situation in the United States under President Joe Biden.

Zakharova described the ongoing crackdown against Trump loyalists in the United States:

“The FBI has reportedly opened more than 400 criminal cases and applied for more than 500 search warrants and subpoenas for suspects; it has also brought charges against and detained around 200 people. Only several dozen defendants have been released on bail or placed under house arrest. The others are being subjected to harsh pressure, with members of their family and social circle being coerced into giving a ‘convenient’ testimony. Moreover, people who have not even been officially charged are losing their jobs; they are being banned from social media and publicly ostracised.”

Never thought i'd live to see the day when Russians were calling out the US for human rights violations.

Twitter Bans Top Conservative Investigative Journalist Paul Sperry Without Warning

Twitter permanently suspended top conservative investigative reporter Paul Sperry on Wednesday.

Sperry is the first reporter to identify Eric Ciaramella as the CIA “whistleblower” behind the first junk impeachment of President Trump.

Paul Sperry also reported on Ciaramella’s plot to remove President Trump from office.

We reached out to Paul Sperry tonight. Here is what he told us about his suspension.

Paul Sperry: There were no warnings. No rules were broken They just don’t like my content because of their politics. They’re trying to claim I’m a “robot” when of course they know better. Tyrants. This is the second time I’ve been harassed since Trump was banned. They are trying to push me off their platform and silence my voice through harassment. If they can harass and silence a professional journalist, they can silence anybody.

Had no idea Bette was so religious….

Not the first time she's opined on divine retribution, see below.
