Dominion Voting Systems on Friday morning filed a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News, alleging that the conservative network pushed false accusations that the voting company had rigged the 2020 election, in order to make a profit and boost ratings.
"Fox sold a false story of election fraud in order to serve its own commercial purposes, severely injuring Dominion in the process," Dominion stated in its complaint.
The complaint, filed in Delaware, is the fourth in a series of lawsuits launched by the Denver-based voting company after it became the center of far-reaching false conspiracy theories surrounding its involvement in the 2020 election – fueled largely by right-wing figures close to then-President Donald Trump as part of the effort to overturn the results of the election.
In its first suit filed against a media company, Dominion claims Fox News pushed the "outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched" claims as part of an effort to "lure viewers back" after they fled to other networks because they saw Fox as "insufficiently supportive" of President Trump after his loss.

The Paraguayan government has been approached with offers of Chinese-made vaccines in exchange for breaking ties with Taiwan, the country’s foreign ministry said in a statement earlier this week. The ministry said that the offers were made by individuals “whose legitimacy and ties to the government of the People’s Republic of China are not proven.”
Foreign Minister Euclides Acevedo vowed in a radio interview Monday to not bow to pressure, according to local news site Hoy. “We are not going to accept them telling us, ‘We sell the vaccines, but they break relations with Taiwan,’” Acevedo said.
Paraguay’s Foreign Ministry didn’t immediately respond to phone calls and an email seeking comment.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Wednesday that she wasn’t aware of the source of the allegations, but said the country was “always honorable and above board” with its offers for vaccine support. “On the specific incident you mentioned, I think it is a typical malicious piece of disinformation,” Hua told a regular news briefing in Beijing.
The episode is the latest example of how geopolitics is infecting the global race for vaccines, with major powers dominating production and hoarding supplies. It also caused street protests against the government’s handling of the health crisis and led to opposition lawmakers unsuccessfully pushing for an impeachment last week.

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates predicted this week that the world will be “back to normal” by the end of 2022 thanks to COVID-19 vaccinations.
Gates told Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and television broadcaster TVN24 that the coronavirus pandemic has been “an incredible tragedy,” but he expressed hope for the future, Reuters reported on Thursday.
“By the end of 2022 we should be basically completely back to normal,” Gates said.
Gates and his wife, Melinda Gates, through their foundation have designated at least $1.75 billion to respond to the pandemic globally, including through vaccines.
The former Microsoft chairman’s forecast comes as many countries, are prioritizing vaccinations, including the U.S., which has administered more than 130 million doses, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) data.
