Per Influence Watch,

Stephen Silberstein, a member of the liberal mega-donor group Democracy Alliance, sits on the board of Vote at Home. [17] Silberstein was a top-20 donor to presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s super PAC, Priorities USA Action,[18] and also sits on the board of National Popular Vote, a group which aims to implement a national plurality-at-large election of the President of the United States. [19]

Digging around on Silberstein found a 2015 WaPo article on top HRC donors which mentioned Silberstein as co-founder of "Innovative Interfaces". HRC involvment so there's got to be a shady deal in here somewhere. Off to USAspending.gov. Innovative Interfaces has rec'd $16.5 million in USG contracts and prizes. Innovative Interfaces is also associated with Cambridge Information Group in the spending database.

Silberstein has a Foundation bearing his name: Stephen M. Silberstein Foundation which, according to the IRS 2018 filing, had over $88M in net assets and only two officers/directors. Stephen and Paul Silberstein. In 2018, the Silberstein Foundation donated $300K to Media Matters, $225K to Vote at Home and $1.5M to Univ. California, Berkeley. (pages 28, 29 and 34 of IRS Form-990PF). The Silberstein Foundation bought 2,100 shares of Netflix in September 2018 (page 47).

From the Influence Watch Silberstein specific page, "Silberstein advocates for a direct election of the President of the United States, and sits on the board of National Popular Vote Inc., a 501(c)(4) non-profit corporation which aims to reform the Electoral College in order to elect the candidate who gets the most votes in all 50 states by forming a compact among a sufficient number of states representing a sufficient number of Electoral College votes.[17]"

Very long, thorough article from 2014 (Capital Research): The Silberstein Foundation has donated $3.45 million to the Alliance for Justice (AfJ) since 2010. AfJ’s mission is to promote the appointment and confirmation of liberal judges who practice judicial activism in order to achieve social outcomes, i.e., so-called social justice and equality of results. It also works to block conservative judicial nominees who believe it is possible to discern the original content and principles of the Constitution, who support the Madisonian principle of limited federal government, and who believe in the general principle of justice as equality before the law. The AfJ is best known for assisting in the organized publicity campaign to “bork” Justice Robert Bork’s nomination in 1987…

The Suez Canal blockage is threatening to intensify a rare shortage of aluminum products crucial to the transport and construction industries.

As factory output surges in Europe and industrial buyers restock ahead of lockdown restrictions easing, supplies of specialist products like aluminum billet are tightening quickly. That’s helped push benchmark aluminum prices near the highest since mid-2018. Several Middle Eastern suppliers including Emirates Global Aluminium and Aluminium Bahrain BSC are specialists in the sector, and while there’s no sign of any significant aluminum hold-ups in the Suez queue, flows to Europe would be at risk if the blockage drags on. Dislodging the stranded Ever Given may take until at least Wednesday.

Short-term freight disruptions typically aren’t an issue in the well-supplied aluminum market, but the scramble for aluminum products in Europe has sent shipping premiums paid by consumers surging. Market observers say that the Suez crisis could worsen the situation. “It’s a little bit of a frenzy,” Kamil Wlazly, a senior metals analyst at Wood Mackenzie, said by phone from London. “There are much more important things going on than the Suez canal blockage – it’s just one more issue.”

Billet buyers in the U.S. are facing a similar shortage, while in top consumer China, government emissions regulations targeting key producers have drastically altered assumptions about supply.

Aluminum in Shanghai rallied to the highest level in almost a decade earlier this month as China’s green push was considered a “game changer” for the long-term outlook after years of gluts in the industry. Prices have eased this week after the nation was said to consider selling about 500,000 tons from state reserves to cool the market.

Aluminum rose 1.7% to $2,283 a ton by 12:40 p.m. on the London Metal Exchange, while Shanghai futures closed 2.1% higher. In other LME metals, copper climbed 1.6% to $8,923 a ton and zinc rose 1.6%, both trimming weekly losses.

Owner of stranded Suez Canal ship aims to free vessel on Saturday

Japan's Shoei Kisen apologizes as fears grow over trade disruption

The Japanese owner of the ship blocking the Suez Canal aims to get the vessel free by Saturday night Japan time, the company said on Friday.

Shoei Kisen set out its goal to free the Ever Given as the company's president apologized for the disruption caused by the stranding of the 400-meter long container vessel in one of the world's busiest waterways. The company, an affiliate of Japan's major shipbuilder Imabari Shipbuilding, is trying to remove sediment from around the bow of the 200,000 ton vessel but has "still not succeeded in doing so," Yukito Higaki said at a press conference on Friday. "We are continuing work to remove sediment as of now, with additional dredging tools," said Higaki in a statement. He said the company aims to free the ship "tomorrow night Japan time." Higaki apologized for the "great trouble and concern" as a result of the incident. "We want to work hard and get the situation back to normal," he said.

The Ever Given ran aground in the canal on Tuesday, completely blocking one of the world's main maritime arteries. The blockage is sparking fears over disruption to global trade as other vessels are delayed or rerouted. Around 10% of global trade passes through the Egypt-controlled waterway. Dozens of ships are waiting at each end of the canal. Shoei is not yet sure about the cost of the accident. "We will consult with an insurance company and respond once we receive [a bill]," Shoei's senior managing director Toshiaki Fujiwara said. There are currently no talks of compensation for delaying other ships. "Rescuing the ship is the priority, and negotiations [about compensation] would come later," Fujiwara said. The Panama-registered vessel is operated by Evergreen Marine of Taiwan.

Higaki explained that while Shoei owns the ship, the company has contracts with a German company for the ship's maintenance and crews. Shoei will be responsible for rescuing and repairing the ship. Asked about responsibility for compensation for losses caused by the blockage, Higaki said only that the company would comply with the law. "There are many laws," including international and local ones, Higaki said. Higaki acknowledged that he "cannot say for sure" whether insurance would cover the cost of dealing with the incident. He said the company is still investigating the cause. "We can only presume that it was due to a rapid change in weather conditions," he said. The company added that there were no reports about navigation instrument problems.

Five experts dispatched by an insurance company have been collaborating with local authorities in Suez since Thursday, according to the company, which is also arranging to dispatch two large tug boats to add to the 10 already at the site. Shoei said the ship's rudder was able to move freely. There is no oil leak stemming from the accident, the company added, nor any injury to crew. Several media reports have suggested that freeing the Ever Given could take at least several more days.

The Suez logjam is already raising freight rates and thus revenue for shippers. Shares in HMM, South Korea's largest shipping company, were up 14% in Seoul on Friday as expectations grew that some companies would profit from the disruption. HMM said one of its container ships coming from Europe was standing by outside the Suez Canal. "We are told that the Suez port authority will take action by the weekend. We are watching developments carefully," said a spokesman for HMM, also known as Hyundai Merchant Marine. Moody's, the credit rating agency, said on Friday that Europe's manufacturing, auto and auto suppliers were expected to be most affected by a blockage. "Even if the situation is resolved within the next 48 hours, port congestion and further delay to an already constrained supply chain is inevitable," said Daniel Harlid, a vice president at Moody's.

Ship tracking websites suggest that some vessels in the Atlantic and Indian oceans are starting to change course away from routes that would have taken them through the Suez Canal.

Sudan moves closer to debt relief with U.S. loan to clear World Bank arrears

Sudan has settled its debts with the World Bank after nearly three decades, moving the heavily indebted African country closer to a much-needed international debt-relief package, the World Bank and U.S. Treasury Department said on Friday.

World Bank President David Malpass said the move meant Sudan could now access nearly $2 billion in grants from the Bank’s International Development Association (IDA). The Sudanese government said $635 million would be immediately available for budget support and welfare spending.

Clearing the arrears, which date back to the years of former autocrat Omar al-Bashir and earlier, was made possible through a $1.15 billion bridge loan from the U.S. government.

Sudan’s Finance Minister Jibril Ibrahim said clearance of the arrears would enable the country to secure financing from the World Bank Group and other multilateral institutions and move forward with transformative development projects. U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said Sudan deserved credit for implementing what she called a “robust economic reform program” that underpins the country’s transition to democratic rule after three decades of international isolation.

Sudan’s civilian-led transitional government took power in April 2019 after the overthrow of Bashir, ending years of international isolation. The country is seeking relief from some $56 billion in external debt owed to international financial institutions, official bilateral creditors and commercial creditors. About 85% of that is in arrears.

A source familiar with the matter said Sudan’s overall debt includes about $2.8 billion owed to the World Bank, IMF and African Development Bank; $19 billion owed to countries in the Paris Club of official bilateral creditors; $21 billion to non-Paris Club members; and the rest to commercial creditors. Sudan has made progress on a staff-monitored program with the International Monetary Fund, but its economy remains “extremely fragile” with inflation over 300% and shortages of basic goods, the IMF said this month. The latest move brings Sudan closer to the first phase of a broader debt relief package under the Heavily Indebted Poor Countries (HIPC) initiative as early as mid-2021, said one source familiar with the process.

The U.S. loan announced on Friday had been in the works for months after the United States removed Sudan from its state sponsor of terrorism list in late December. Sudan fulfilled one of the main conditions demanded by international donors in February when it took steps to unify its official and black-market exchange rates.

Parler Just Flipped Big Tech's Jan 6th Conspiracy Theory On Its Head

In the days after the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021, Big Tech moved against a conservative alternative social media platform, Parler, based on the premise that the rioters has used Parler to plan the attack on the Capitol and that Parler had failed in its responsibility to prevent such coordination. Based on this narrative, Apple and Google removed Parler from their app stores and Amazon removed Parler’s internet hosting. Yet on Thursday, Parler flipped the narrative on its head.

On Thursday, Parler sent a response to the House Committee on Oversight and Reform’s request for documents regarding the riot, the company explained in a press release. In that response, Parler revealed that it had “proactively developed an open line of communication with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in the fall of 2020 and referred violent content and incitement from Parler’s platform over 50 times before January 6th. Parler also warned the FBI about specific threats of violence being planned for the events at the Capitol on January 6th.”

In its letter, Parler said that the company recognizes “legal limits to free speech” and that its policies “have always prohibited threats of violence and incitement on its platform.”

The letter details Parler’s efforts “to flag and remove unlawful speech from its platform that was not protected by the First Amendment.” It also notes that of the 270 charging documents filed by the Department of Justice, 80 percent of social media references involved Big Tech platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. “Only 5% referred to Parler.”

The letter goes on to explain that Parler accumulated over 15 million users by January 2021 and its app was the most downloaded app at the Apple App Store and the Google U.S. Play Store on January 8, 2021.

The company’s press release connected the dots.

“Big Tech rivals Facebook and Twitter saw Parler as a viable threat and ganged up with Amazon and others to de-platform and destroy the Company. Big Tech has been effectively scapegoating Parler for the riots at the Capitol, but Parler’s revelations today show that the Company acted responsibly to try and stop the violence at the Capitol on January 6th,” the press release concluded.

Along with the letter and the press release, Parler provided the emails alerting the FBI to incitements to violence on Parler’s social media platform. The company repeatedly warned its FBI contact about the potential for violence on January 6.

In one email, Parler forwarded a message from a user who called for “an armed force of American Patriots 150,000… prepared to react to the congressional events of January 6th … And follow what the Declaration of Independence has dictated to do in situations of absolute despotism.”

“One more from same account. More where this came from. Concerned about Wednesday,” a Parler employee wrote to the FBI contact on January 2, the Saturday before the events of Wednesday, January 6.

Contrary to the Big Tech narrative, Parler did its due diligence and reported threats of violence to the FBI in advance of the Capitol riot. These actions, coupled with the fact that Parler only appeared in 5 percent of the DOJ’s charging documents, completely flips the Big Tech narrative on its head. The Capitol rioters did coordinate on Parler, in part, but they also did so on other social media platforms.

Parler was not negligent in its duty to remove incitements to violence, as Amazon, Apple, and Google claimed. In fact, it removed those incitements and altered the FBI about them. Parler may not have been perfect in this regard, but the company had been proactive before the Capitol riot.

I’ve got some good news for a change — we have a major victory in our lawsuit against the cancel culture mob. I think we’ve found a way, at least in Canada, and probably in the United Kingdom and Australia — to use the law to stop deplatforming.

It took eighteen months, but I think it’s really working; we’ve proven the concept.

Let me show you the results, and then let me tell you how we did it — and how you might be able to, also.

I now have a signed apology from the owner of two theatres that cancelled two book signings I had scheduled back in October of 2019 for my book about Justin Trudeau called The Libranos: What the media won’t tell you about Justin Trudeau’s corruption.

I was scheduled to do a book launch in Edmonton and then in Calgary, at these great independent movie theatres.

So I signed a contract with these theatres do to my book signings there, and I paid the whole rental fee in advance, and I was excited about it.

But then, about a week before my book launch, a left-wing Twitter mob started threatening the theatre owner — they wanted to cancel my book-signing!

So I called up the theatre owner to reassure him, and I told him I’d hire some private security at my own expense just to make sure there was no problem and to put him at ease.

The owner, Mike Brar, told me in thirty years he had never cancelled a movie and he didn’t expect to start now.

But finally, when the day of the book signing came, and we all showed up — the theatre doors were locked and were kept us out.

So I did my book launch on the street outside!

Well, fast forward to today.

Mike: apology accepted. And I really think he means it. I just don’t think he had ever been treated that way by the mob. You know how cruel people can be on the Internet.

Leftists know that wouldn’t work on me. So they picked on an immigrant entrepreneur, and scared him to death. What a bunch of bullies.

What was so gross is that some of the mob were professors and staff at the University of Alberta. How awful is that — professors banning book launches. That’s disgraceful, frankly.

But like I say — what could I do? The doors were closed; the contract wasn’t honoured.

Now, as you can sort of tell, I sued Mike Brar and the two theatres for breach of contract. I had paid him in advance, he took my money and he scuppered the whole evening. I don’t like it, but I can understand it, and I really do accept his apology and the other parts of the settlement that I’m not at liberty to discuss.

But what about the real bad guys here — the mob itself?

Even Mike's own staff, Michael Corless and Jordon Thompson — they pressured him to rip up his contract with me. Do they really get to walk away from this? Does the Twitter mob? Do those woke professors?

No. And this is the lesson I want to share with you. This is how I fought back.

Dominion Voting Systems on Friday morning filed a $1.6 billion defamation lawsuit against Fox News, alleging that the conservative network pushed false accusations that the voting company had rigged the 2020 election, in order to make a profit and boost ratings.

"Fox sold a false story of election fraud in order to serve its own commercial purposes, severely injuring Dominion in the process," Dominion stated in its complaint.

The complaint, filed in Delaware, is the fourth in a series of lawsuits launched by the Denver-based voting company after it became the center of far-reaching false conspiracy theories surrounding its involvement in the 2020 election – fueled largely by right-wing figures close to then-President Donald Trump as part of the effort to overturn the results of the election.

In its first suit filed against a media company, Dominion claims Fox News pushed the "outlandish, defamatory, and far-fetched" claims as part of an effort to "lure viewers back" after they fled to other networks because they saw Fox as "insufficiently supportive" of President Trump after his loss.

Bill Gates predicts world will be 'back to normal' by end of 2022

Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates predicted this week that the world will be “back to normal” by the end of 2022 thanks to COVID-19 vaccinations.

Gates told Polish newspaper Gazeta Wyborcza and television broadcaster TVN24 that the coronavirus pandemic has been “an incredible tragedy,” but he expressed hope for the future, Reuters reported on Thursday.

“By the end of 2022 we should be basically completely back to normal,” Gates said.

Gates and his wife, Melinda Gates, through their foundation have designated at least $1.75 billion to respond to the pandemic globally, including through vaccines.

A Falcon 9 rocket makes an uncontrolled re-entry

Typically, a Falcon 9 rocket makes a more controlled return to Earth.

A little more than three weeks ago, a Falcon 9 rocket launched from Florida's Kennedy Space Center carrying a payload of 60 Starlink satellites into low Earth orbit. It was the first of four such missions flown this month by SpaceX.

The entire mission was nominal, except for a problem with the rocket's second stage. Typically, within an orbit or two of launching, the Falcon 9 rocket's Merlin vacuum engine will relight and nudge the second stage downward so that it harmlessly re-enters Earth's atmosphere into the Pacific Ocean.

However, there was not enough propellant after this launch to ignite the Merlin engine and complete the burn. So the propellant was vented into space, and the second stage was set to make a more uncontrolled re-entry into the atmosphere. In this case, the Falcon 9 upper stage still comes back because when it released the Starlink satellites, the vehicle was orbiting Earth at an average altitude of about 250 km. This high above the Earth, it was still susceptible to drag from the thin wisps of our planet's upper atmosphere.

On Thursday night, three weeks after launching, this second stage re-entered the thicker part of Earth's atmosphere and, in doing so over populated areas, provided some spectacular views for the Portland and Washington state region. Videos shared on various social media networks showed what appeared to be an invasion by an alien armada.

This was, however, simply the Falcon 9 rocket's second stage—which weighs about four metric tons unfueled—breaking apart in the atmosphere and burning up. It is likely that the second stage completely broke apart over the Rocky Mountains near the United States and Canadian border.

Did any pieces make it to the ground? It's possible that some of the more dense components of the rocket, such as pieces of the Merlin engine or composite overwrap pressure vessels, withstood re-entry and landed on the ground in the Rockies. There were no immediate reports of any injuries.

Historically, when rockets deployed their payloads at higher orbits, these spent second stages were often just left in space for decades. Today, they're a big contributor to the problem of orbital debris, so there is pressure on rocket companies to "dispose" of their second stages, either by deorbiting them or sending them into heliocentric orbits. SpaceX hopes to address this problem with its Starship vehicle by making the entire vehicle reusable, with both the Super Heavy rocket and Starship upper stage returning to Earth for reuse.

Chinese Bombers Make "Largest Ever" Incursion Into Taiwan's Air Space In Dramatic 'Message To West'

n what's clearly a well-timed and glaring "message" not only aimed at Taiwan but especially at its Western backers amid this week's continuing sanctions tit-for-tat with Beijing, Taiwan's military is reporting on Friday the "largest ever" incursion by China's air force.

While in the past months the PLA aerial patrols have grown bigger and more frequent - sometimes coming every week and often involving eight or a dozen or possibly even fifteen combined Chinese fighters and bombers - Friday's incursion involved a record-setting twenty PLA military aircraft. This is by far the largest ever recorded, since Taipei began publicly releasing data on the incursions.

"Twenty Chinese military aircraft entered Taiwan’s air defense identification zone on Friday, in the largest incursion yet reported by the island’s defence ministry and marking a dramatic escalation of tension across the Taiwan Strait," Reuters reports. Such a large force is being described as "unusual" by Taiwan's Defense Ministry. It confirmed the location of the aircraft and published select images in an official statement. Crucially the incursion in the democratic island's southwest defense zone included four nuclear-capable H-6K bombers being escorted by smaller fighter jets.

"The presence of so many Chinese combat aircraft on Friday’s mission - Taiwan said it was made up of four nuclear-capable H-6K bombers and 10 J-16 fighter jets, among others - was unusual and came as the island’s air force suspended all training missions after two fighter jet crashes this week," Reuters continued.

Aside from this week's sanctions escalation involving coordinated action of the US, UK, EU, and Canada on Monday over alleged 'genocide' and widespread human rights abuses in Xinjiang province, this latest bomber incursion comes a day after Taiwan's defense chief admitted the island has initiated mass production of long-range missiles capable of striking mainland China. Friday's largest ever recorded incursion is without doubt the mainland's "answer" to Taiwan's boasting over its missile developments and ambitions. While Biden said Thursday during his first presidential press conference that he "doesn't want confrontation" with China he's done little in terms of rolling pack 'confrontational' Trump policies - but quite the opposition - he's arguably actually increased the pressure.

This means there's a great likelihood the Pentagon will send a destroyer through the contested Taiwan Strait once again in a bit of 'counter-messaging' as China ramps up its flights. And on up the escalation ladder we go…
