Japan's Takeda applies for gov't approval of Moderna's booster shots

Japan's Takeda Pharmaceutical Co. has applied with the health ministry for approval to use the COVID-19 vaccine developed by U.S. biotechnology firm Moderna Inc. for booster shots from February, company officials said Thursday.

Takeda, which is in charge of sales and distribution of the Moderna vaccine in Japan, submitted the application on Wednesday seeking the green light for the amount to be used and the method in administering it. Clinical trial data were also presented.

A government subcommittee of health experts will discuss the use of the vaccine as a booster shot in late December at the earliest, with Takeda planning to start administering the vaccine at workplaces from March. In its clinical trial, Moderna gave 0.25 milliliters for a third dose half of the amount it used for the first two shots, which was 0.5 ml for each after a period of over six months since the second shot was administered. The move came after a health ministry panel approved Wednesday the administration of third booster shots of U.S. pharmaceutical giant Pfizer Inc.'s vaccine to people aged 18 and over, starting with medical personnel from December.

Following the panel's approval, the ministry also gave the nod for the vaccine's use as booster shots on Thursday.

'Left Winger' Bill Ackman Says Kyle Rittenhouse Is "A Patriot Who Acted In Self-Defense", Media Assumes Twitter Account Hacked

Billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman is likely about to become the new poster-boy for white-supremacy, assigned to the junk heap of 'wrong' right-ward-thinking racists as he dares to suggest that Kyle Rittenhouse is an innocent "patriot" and may not be the nazi mass-murderer that the media has constantly defined him as for months. (sarcasm off).

In a well reasoned Twitter thread this evening, Ackman details his thoughts about the Rittenhouse trial, starting with a shocker for many...

"Last night, Neri [Ackman's wife] and I watched several hours of .#Kylerittenhouse direct testimony and cross examination. We came away believing that #Kyle is telling the truth and that he acted in self defense..."

Last night, Neri and I watched several hours of .#Kylerittenhouse direct testimony and cross examination. We came away believing that #Kyle is telling the truth and that he acted in self defense. We found him to be a civic-minded patriot with a history of — Bill Ackman (@BillAckman) November 11, 2021

The thread continued...

We found him to be a civic-minded patriot with a history of helping his community as an EMT and fireman in training, in his removing hate graffiti earlier that day from a local school, and ultimately in volunteering to protect a business during the night of August 25th in Kenosha. Our first hand impressions of Kyle were materially different from those we had previously formed based on media reports and opinion pieces that we had consumed. I have always been frustrated to read an inaccurate press report about a subject I know well, yet somehow I continue to believe other articles in the same newspaper about subjects I know less well. Media and political bias are dividing our country and destroying lives. While we have not heard the entire trial, based on our assessment of Kyle on the stand, we believe that he will be found innocent by the jury. Often times, communities react negatively and even violently after a jury verdict where they are surprised by the outcome based on what they have previously read in the newspaper, seen on TV or more likely been served on social media. I encourage you to watch the trial, or at a minimum his testimony and cross examination, before you form a view of his guilt or innocence. With respect to my own political bias, I am not a gun owner (but muh security people do), nor a member of the NRA. On balance, I support stronger gun regulations and removing loopholes in the sale of guns. Unfortunately it seems that society’s view of #kyle ‘s innocence depends more on one’s views about gun control rather than on what actually took place last August. Kyle Rittenhouse’s life is at risk. Justice demands a fair trial. Society would benefit greatly if politics did not enter the court room and convict innocent people.

And that is where one might naturally end the conversation. A rational-thinking intelligent person laying out his own views on what he and his wife believe. However, Ackman tweeted one more tweet, which sums up everything about the global groupthink that dominates media..."Just got a call from the media asking if my Twitter account was hacked. That is, the reporter couldn’t conceive of the idea that I could believe that Kyle is innocent because I am not a right winger. Crazy. "

Crazy indeed, Bill!

2 South Koreans nabbed in Japan part of North Korea cash operation: sources

Two South Koreans arrested in Japan last fall on suspicion of violating the country's immigration law had been involved in an operation to obtain foreign currency under the direction of a man believed to be a North Korean agent, investigative sources said Thursday.

Japanese police have classified their cooperation as a spy case involving North Korea and believe it is just one part of a foreign currency acquisition network put in place by Pyongyang to circumvent economic sanctions. According to the sources, the man who gave the orders to the South Korean pair via several other individuals mainly operated from China, using a fictitious name such as Ri Ho Nam. He is reported to have belonged to North Korea's primary intelligence agency called the Reconnaissance General Bureau and is believed to still be a central figure in the foreign currency acquisition network. The man is also said to be the model for a high-ranking North Korean official who appears in "The Spy Gone North," a film loosely based on the memoirs of a former South Korean agent. The two South Koreans a man in his 60s and a woman in her 70s established a trading company at the end of 2016 in a condominium in Tokyo to import and sell nutritional drinks from their home country.

They were arrested in October and November last year by Tokyo police for allegedly conducting activities outside of their status of residence and entering Japan on fraudulently obtained documents. An analysis of seized materials revealed that the pair used their company to trade marine products with North Korea and were involved in a plan to build a liquefied petroleum gas terminal near the North Korean border in Russia's Far East. In what has been deemed as an operation led by North Korea's spy agency to acquire foreign currency, the police believe some of the funds obtained by the man and the woman through their business and other means were routed to the man who had instructed them. The South Korean man, who had been living in Japan for a long time, and the woman, who had repeatedly entered the country on short-stay visas since around November 2017, were collaborators in the operation, according to the sources. But Japanese prosecutors have decided not to indict them and the pair are no longer in custody.

South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported in February that the man who had directed the pair met with an official of Korea Gas Corp. at a hotel in Vladivostok in Russia's Far East in late 2019. At that time, he asked if the South Korean gas company would buy Russian-produced gas purchased by North Korea, but the firm had declined.

Japan and U.S. hold joint drills in Okinawa

Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force and the US Air Force have conducted joint search and rescue exercises in Okinawa Prefecture for the first time ever, the Defense Agency said Thursday.

The drills took place in the skies and seas north of the Ishigaki and Miyako islands in the southernmost Japan prefecture on Tuesday. People familiar with the matter said they were held in anticipation of a contingency around not only the Senkaku Islands, some 170 kilometers away from Ishigaki, but nearby Taiwan.

The national security laws allow the SDF to conduct search-and-rescue operations and give rearguard support for the US military dealing with incidents having “significant influence” on Japan’s peace and security. An armed attack on Taiwan can be regarded as such an incident due to its proximity to the Japanese-administered Senkakus, also claimed by China. The drills were joined by the ASDF’s UH-60J helicopters from the Naha base in Okinawa and the US Air Force’s CV-22 Ospreys for special operations and MC-130J transport planes. “The exercises were aimed at improving the Japan-US alliance’s deterrence and joint response capabilities,” Shunji Izutsu, ASDF chief of staff, told a press conference. According to the ministry, Adm. John Aquilino, commander of the US Indo-Pacific Command, and Gen. Koji Yamazaki, chief of staff at the ministry’s Joint Staff, visited the Ground SDF’s Camp Amami in Kagoshima Prefecture, north of Okinawa, the ASDF’s Naha base and the GSDF’s Camp Yonaguni, both in Okinawa, on Monday and Tuesday. The drills and the inspection tour are believed to have been aimed at deterring China’s active expansion of its military presence in the East China Sea, people familiar with the matter said.
