I feel you are assessing the intellect, logical reasoning and rational thought were things possessed by people who would torture, rape and murder children.
They would be worried about the ocean currents - easily mapped - causing the bodies to float onto some tourist beach someplace.
Remember, darkness and evil flourish on chaos. First it gives you the idea and then cancels out the competing aversion to the idea and enhances the desirability of the idea.
