LIVE: Fed Chair Jerome Powell testifies before Congress on monetary policy and economy — 3/2/22

Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell appears before the House Financial Services Committee to present the semiannual monetary policy report and discuss the state of the U.S. economy.

Powell still sees interest rate hikes coming, but noted Wednesday that the Russia-Ukraine war has injected uncertainty into the outlook.

In remarks prepared for dual appearances this week before House and Senate committees in Congress, the central bank chief acknowledged the “tremendous hardship” the Russian invasion of Ukraine is causing. “The implications for the U.S. economy are highly uncertain, and we will be monitoring the situation closely,” Powell said.

Silver contracts getting paid off via EFP

EFP=An exchange for physical trade (EFP) is a privately negotiated and simultaneous exchange of a futures position for a cash position.

Here is the latest update on the EFP at the COMEX- gettin BUSY here nao.

This is for May 2022 'delivery'.

2,949 contracts 'settled' for cash payments= 14,745,000/ozs of paper silver.

Let's use $25 as the input price and that takes the avg. of cash rec'd for those contracts at $368,625,000

Gotta be Bank of America buying contracts so they can get paid off for cash to use to satisfy its TOTALLY FUCKED position with physical Ag leased from JP Morgan

This is way too many for it to be anyone other than them.

I have no idea, nor does anyone else, of a "get-out" clause in the contract between them but this data suggests that a cash payment back to JP Morgan is an option.

The only way for them to "get out" is to find a willing seller of phyzz (good luck with that !) or use the COMEX Futures (or some other cash for trash market mechanism) to pay off the delivery commitment.

Like I stated in the first post of this a few days ago I could be wrong but the volume suggests that the CFTC is ACTIVELY facilitating this to "save" someone-dat someone is, imo, Bank of America.

Chaos Erupts In Energy Markets As European Gas Jumps 60%

The invasion of Ukraine has transformed Russia into a commercial outcast as refiners balk at purchasing Russian energy products, and banks are refusing to finance shipments. The result is a physical market in disarray as geopolitical turmoil upends supply chains and keeps markets volatile.

Commodity markets have been in turmoil since the Feb. 24 invasion. European natural gas jumped as much as 60% on Wednesday -- as buyers, traders and shippers avoid Russian gas.

Three sources told Bloomberg that gas and power traders are avoiding new deals with Russia's Gazprom PJSC. They said European companies are expected to unwind contracts, or clearinghouses will halt trading with Russia's state-owned energy company and liquidate their positions. But for now, Gazprom's gas supplies are flowing into Europe and increasing. Shipments at top entry points, such as Velke Kapusany in Slovakia and Yamal-Europe pipeline overnight in Germany, have recorded gas levels rebounded, with more capacity booked.

The invasion has turned Russian into a commercial outcast and is causing changes in market structures, price dislocations, and violent swings across commodities and many asset classes. The European benchmark, Dutch gas, jumped to nearly 195 euros a megawatt-hour, a record high, and were 38% higher at 167 euros at 0728 ET.

The invasion has sent crude soaring with Brent crude topping $113 a barrel around 0300 ET as buyers bulk at Russian energy products. Russia, which supplies one-third of Europe's gas needs, has said delivery of gas through vast pipeline networks will continue. Gazprom warned Tuesday of "serious challenges" in replenishing European gas storage facilities for next winter, considering "such significant gas volumes" are needed. This has never happened ahead of the summer months. Europe is already smack dab in an energy crisis that appears to be worsening by the day as gas prices soar to record highs. Demand destruction will be brought forward at this rate and could push the continent's economy into stagflation. On Tuesday, European Central Bank Governing Council member Olli Rehn was quoted by Bloomberg as saying Russia's invasion will lead to stagflation. He said the ECB is not in a position to tighten fiscal policy.

World Bank President David Malpass told CBS on Sunday that it could take upwards of five years to find alternatives to Russian gas.

https://www.zerohedge.com/commodities/chaos-erupts-energy-markets-european-gas-jumps-60

VP told you stupid fuggers to place orders late last year when you first started bitching about supply..you din't so because of that you have no alternatives.

GFYs

The people, as always, pay the price of that inexcusable "mistake"

And Malpass, former Chief 'Economist' at Bear Stearns you can eat a bag of dicks

Share Prices of Russia’s Largest Companies Drop to Pennies on the London Stock Exchange Today

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, a nation of 44 million people, has been playing out for just seven days. But the losses Putin has suffered on the financial battlefield are already staggering.

As a result of sanctions imposed by the European Commission, the U.S., Canada and the U.K., (that many other countries are now following), investing in anything connected to Russia has become a toxic idea to investors around the globe. As a result, the Moscow Stock Exchange has shuttered stock trading for the third day in a row and it’s been left up to investors to attempt to exit their Russian stocks on the London Stock Exchange.

As of this morning, some of Russia’s largest companies are trading for pennies in London. As of 11:00 a.m. (London time), Russia’s giant energy company, Gazprom, was trading at 3 cents a share, a 99 percent decline from the start of the year. Russia’s largest crude oil exporter, Rosneft, was trading at 96 cents shortly after 12 noon in London.

Russia’s largest natural gas company, Novatek, was trading at 61 cents at 11:30 a.m. London time. Novatek was a $238 stock in London at the beginning of the year.

And, to underscore just how precarious the financial situation is for Russia, its largest bank, Sberbank, which has experienced a bank run on its foreign branches, has been trading all morning in London between a penny and five cents. Sberbank was a $16 stock in London at the beginning of the year.

The largest Russian exchange-traded fund (ETF) that trades in the U.S., the VanEck Russia ETF (RSX), closed yesterday at $8.26. That’s lower than where it traded during the financial crash of 2008 and a 69 percent decline from the beginning of the year.

The prices of Russian stocks in London this morning is a reflection of the fact that liquidity is drying up in anything that has the word Russia connected to it – that includes the Russian currency, the Ruble, which has been plunging in value against the U.S. Dollar since the invasion of Ukraine began on February 24. As of this morning, the Ruble continues to trade at a record low against the U.S. Dollar, now valued at less than one cent.

With foreign debt sales closed to most Russian companies and Russia’s central bank’s assets frozen throughout much of the world as a result of the sanctions, it’s unclear how Putin thinks he can finance and sustain a war against a nation of 44 million people – who have clearly demonstrated over the past seven days that they don’t want him there.

With the Moscow Stock Exchange (MOEX) closed for the third day in a row and its website also down (a Ukrainian hackers’ group has taken credit for that), we went to its Twitter account so see what was going on at the Exchange prior to the invasion of Ukraine. It turns out that the Exchange had plans to become a major international venue for stock trading.

Edited the personal BS

Obviously the Martens have drank the kool-aid regarding the real truth on the outcome and progress of this "invasion"

Stick to the numbers (which are correct-cause dat did habben) and leave the personal opinions out of it.

The work is so much better when you do.

This is priceless!!

Read Apple CEO Tim Cook’s Memo After Stopping Sales in Russia

Apple Inc. Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook sent an email to all employees following the company’s announcement that it will stop sales in Russia, telling staff that it will match donations to support Ukraine.

The full email, obtained by Bloomberg News, is below:

Team,

I wanted to take a moment to address the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.

I know I speak for everyone at Apple in expressing our concern for all of those affected by the violence. With each new image of families fleeing their homes and brave citizens fighting for their lives, we see how important it is for people around the world to come together to advance the cause of peace.

Apple is donating to humanitarian relief efforts and providing aid for the unfolding refugee crisis. We are also working with partners to assess what more we can do. I know that many of you are eager to find ways to support as well, and we want to help amplify the impact of your donations. Starting today, Apple will match your donations at a rate of 2:1 for eligible organizations, and we will make this retroactive for donations to those organizations since Feb. 25. Please visit the Employee Giving Portal to learn more.

We are working to support our teams in Ukraine and across the region. In Ukraine, we have been in contact with every employee, assisting them and their families in any way we can. For our Ukrainian team members located outside of the country that may need support, please contact (address redacted). And for any employee who needs any support, please visit the People site for available resources.

As a company, we are taking additional actions as well. We have paused all product sales in Russia. Last week, we stopped all exports into our sales channel in the country. Apple Pay and other services have been limited. RT News and Sputnik News are no longer available for download from the App Store outside Russia. And we have disabled both traffic and live incidents in Apple Maps in Ukraine as a safety and precautionary measure for Ukrainian citizens.

We will continue to evaluate the situation and are in communication with relevant governments on the actions we are taking.

This moment calls for unity, it calls for courage, and it reminds us that we must never lose sight of the humanity we all share. In these difficult times, I take comfort in knowing that we are united in our commitment to each other, to our users, and to being a force for good in the world.

Fed's Powell to propose 25 bps rate increase at March meeting

The Fed chair also said the central bank would start trimming its balance sheet after rate hikes begin. Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell told Congress on Wednesday that he plans on proposing a 25 basis point interest rate hike at the central bank's upcoming March meeting, as the U.S. economy battles soaring inflation not seen in four decades. "With inflation well above 2% and a strong labor market, we expect it will be appropriate to raise the target range for the federal funds rate at our meeting later this month," Powell testified before the House Financial Services Committee, saying that he is "inclined to propose and support a 25 basis point rate hike" at the Fed's March 15-16 gathering.

Powell added that the central bank is "prepared to move more aggressively by raising the federal funds rate by more than 25 basis points" at future meetings. The Fed chair also said he expects to "make good progress toward an agreement on a plan to shrink the balance sheet," but that it would not be finalized this month. Federal Reserve officials have signaled for months that interest rate increases were coming, and Powell said Tuesday that before Russia invaded Ukraine he would have expected a series of increases in the near future but that the war could now have an impact on the central bank's actions. "The near-term effects on the U.S. economy of the invasion of Ukraine, the ongoing war, the sanctions, and of events to come, remain highly uncertain," Powell said in his prepared remarks. "Making appropriate monetary policy in this environment requires a recognition that the economy evolves in unexpected ways. We will need to be nimble in responding to incoming data and the evolving outlook." The Fed has left rates unchanged since March 2020, but with inflation hitting a 40-year high last month at 7.5% compared to the prior year, the central bank has faced increasing pressure to implement rate hikes.
