Oil From Biden's Emergency SPR Release Is Heading For Europe

Joe Biden's decision to release 180 million barrels of oil from the US Strategic Petroleum Reserve - one million barrels per day for 180 days, ending just before the midterm elections which the Democrats will lose in an avalanche - was meant to help lower US gasoline prices "because Putin price hike." Instead, it is heading for Europe. According to Bloomberg, citing a person familiar with the matter, the Suezmax ship Advantage Spring - sailing for Rotterdam, according to ship-tracking data compiled by Bloomberg - received emergency SPR sweet crude from Energy Transfer’s Nederland oil facility around April 1 for export. The Suezmax also received SPR crude from Aframax Eagle Hatteras, which loaded at same terminal in first week of April.

The Advantage Spring was chartered by Atlantic Trading, an affiliate of Total, ship fixtures data show. It appears that somehow the definition of emergency now includes making a profit at the expense of American consumers because sooner or later a real emergency will hit and then it will be too late, while easing the true energy emergency over in Europe.

According to Matt Smith, oil analyst at commodity data firm Kpler, this is the first export of SPR crude since last November. Which means the oil was apportioned from Biden's shock SPR release.

One wonders what is behind Biden's decision to make US emergency SPR oil available across the Atlantic; one can only hope that it doesn't mean that in the coming midterms mail in ballots will also be made available to Europeans...

China’s Property Sector Contracts for Third Straight Quarter

China’s property sector contracted for a third straight quarter, a sign that real estate was still dragging on the economy, even before the recent Covid outbreaks and lockdowns began to escalate. Output in the real-estate industry, a key economic contributor, contracted 2% in the first quarter from a year ago, China’s National Bureau of Statistics said in a report Tuesday. It was the steepest drop among all sectors, according to the bureau’s detailed breakdown of economic activity from January to March.

The property sector’s performance was slightly better than the fourth quarter of 2021, when it decreased by 2.9%. Construction grew 1.4% in the same period, a pickup from the 2.1% contraction in the final three months of 2021. Output in the hotel and catering industry dipped 0.3% in the first quarter from a year ago, making it the second-worst performing sector. Rising Covid infections and the strict curbs to contain them began to dent consumer spending toward the end of the quarter.

China’s economy grew 4.8% in the first quarter, data released Monday showed, a stronger-than-expected acceleration that doesn’t capture the full extent of the damage from recent lockdowns. The financial and trade hub Shanghai began to restrict movement in March, but those curbs have stretched well into April.

Industrial output and investment held up from January to March despite the quiet Lunar New Year holiday and disruption from Covid outbreaks, according to Monday’s data. But the lockdowns began to weigh on consumer spending in March, as retail sales contracted for the first time since 2020. Catering revenue plunged 16.4% last month, the sharpest decline since mid-2020.

The surveyed jobless rate climbed to 5.8%, the highest since May 2020.

Blackstone adds to bet on student housing with $13 billion deal

Blackstone Inc. is increasing its investment in student housing as the U.S. emerges from the Covid-19 pandemic, agreeing to buy American Campus Communities Inc. in a cash transaction valued at about $12.8 billion.

The all-cash transaction is the largest student-housing deal by the Blackstone Real Estate Income Trust. Known as BREIT for short, the $97 billion fund last year invested in the industry through a $784 million joint venture with Landmark Properties. New York-based Blackstone has been scooping up U.S. housing assets of all kinds as the pandemic reshapes where Americans work and live, which along with low borrowing costs and supply constraints has driven a boom in property values across the country and led to the sharpest monthly rent increases in decades.

BREIT in particular has become a force to be reckoned with in the real estate industry since launching in 2017. Earlier this year, it struck a deal to buy apartment owner Preferred Apartment Communities Inc. in a $5.8 billion deal. It also purchased Home Partners of America Inc., which rents single-family homes, in a $6 billion transaction last year. “American Campus Communities has a best-in-class portfolio and platform, built on longstanding relationships with some of the most distinguished and fastest growing universities in the country,” Jacob Werner, Blackstone’s co-head of Americas acquisitions, said in a statement Tuesday.

Blackstone will pay $65.47 a share, according to the statement, or about 14% above Monday’s closing price. Shares of Austin, Texas-based American Campus jumped 12.7% to $64.91 at 9:52 a.m. in New York. More than half of BREIT’s assets are in residential property, according to its latest fact sheet, with almost 20% of its real estate is in Las Vegas and Atlanta.

Blackstone’s deeper expansion into the U.S. housing market comes at a time when investors are watching the industry closely for signs of cooling, with 30-year mortgage rates reaching 5% for the first time since 2011. Potential home buyers signaled dismay over elevated rates, on top of record-high prices, in a survey released this week by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. American Campus says it’s the nation’s largest owner, manager and developer of high-quality student housing communities. It owned 166 student-housing properties with about 111,900 beds as of Dec. 31, including around Arizona State University, Florida State University, and the University of California in Berkeley. Almost a quarter of its buildings are on-campus.

Private equity firms are betting that private student housing complexes will provide better returns compared with apartments and other residential assets. Dormitory rates can reset every year, which serves as a hedge against inflation.

The market for student housing will expand to 9.2 million beds by 2031 from 8.5 million in 2020, according to the National Multifamily Housing Council. BREIT is investing in American Campus Communities Inc. alongside other Blackstone perpetual capital vehicles. These funds have no deadline for which to exit bets, in a sign of how the firm is expanding from its previous strategy of buying properties with the goal of flipping them to a deep-pocketed buyer.

IMF Slashes Global Growth Outlook, Blames Putin; Fears 'Social Unrest' & 'Global Instability'

Echoing The World Bank's pessimistic perspective from yesterday, The IMF has cut its growth forecasts, saying that global economic prospects have been severely set back, largely because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

The war adds to the series of supply shocks that have struck the global economy in recent years. Like seismic waves, its effects will propagate far and wide - through commodity markets, trade, and financial linkages. In the matter of a few weeks, the world has yet again experienced a major, transformative shock,’’ IMF chief economist Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas wrote in the foreword to the fund’s World Economic Outlook report. “Just as a durable recovery from the pandemic-induced global economic collapse appeared in sight, the war has created the very real prospect that a large part of the recent gains will be erased." The IMF has revised its projection for global growth downwards to 3.6 percent in both 2022 and 2023 - a steep falloff from 6.1% last year and from the 4.4% growth it had expected for 2022 back in January. This reflects the direct impact of the war on Ukraine and sanctions on Russia, with both countries projected to experience steep contractions. This year’s growth outlook for the European Union has been revised downward by 1.1 percentage points due to the indirect effects of the war, making it the second largest contributor to the overall downward revision.

In this context, beyond its immediate and tragic humanitarian impact, IMF says the war will slow economic growth and increase inflation. Overall economic risks have risen sharply, and policy tradeoffs have become even more challenging. As The IMF warns, the risk is rising that inflation expectations drift away from central bank inflation targets, prompting a more aggressive tightening response from policymakers. Furthermore, increases in food and fuel prices may also significantly increase the prospect of social unrest in poorer countries.

In a speech last week, IMF managing director Kristalina Georgieva warned of the threat of “more hunger, more poverty and more social unrest.’’ Particular attention should also be paid to the overall stability of the global economic order to make sure that the multilateral framework that has lifted hundreds of millions out of poverty is not dismantled.

Finally, and perhaps most ominously, The IMF further warns that war also increases the risk of a more permanent fragmentation of the world economy into geopolitical blocks with distinct technology standards, cross-border payment systems, and reserve currencies. Such a tectonic shift would cause long-run efficiency losses, increase volatility and represent a major challenge to the rules-based framework that has governed international and economic relations for the last 75 years. The IMF claims the most immediate priority is to end the war... (does it look like anyone involved is working towards that goal?)

Germany's Scholz under pressure to speed up weapons exports to Ukraine

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz is under growing pressure to speed up weapons exports to Ukraine amid impatience from Kyiv at what it sees as a slow response while the Russian onslaught continues. Although Mr Scholz has spoken of a historic shift in German policy after years of conciliation towards Russia, critics say this has been half-hearted in practice, with Berlin accused of lagging behind allies in offering practical support. The cool atmosphere was underlined this week by a row over a potential visit to Ukraine by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who said he had pulled out after learning he was not welcome in Kyiv.

Mkt Fag: Moar shorts on fire edition-metals/oil dropped like a liberal's pants when hearing Muh Ukraine edition

The S&P is back above the 50DMA, Dow above its 100DMA, and Russell 2000 at its 50DMA.

With yesterdays big volume exits and really shitty close on all the majors >>133555 pb it was of course completely natural that it was dropped ever so slightly on the open-enticing moar shorts by dropping the NAS below the neckline-yesterdays close-for the first 12 minutes and then BOOM!!!!-instant annihilation. They smell blood and the pile on occurs-how many times are you dumb ass shorts gonna get bitch slapped by the Big bois before you.....nevermind..you are just GIVING them $. The big exits continue 1.74B @ 11:44am EST-just after Europe closed-that either a short (doubt it) or Softbank continuing it's "exits". So same shit as yesterday-big chunks that increase in size as the day wore on. (black dots in cap #2). There is and continues to be someMAJORliquidation going on in the NAS (you'll also need to consider shorts covering but as already mentioned they do NOT all push the "Buy-to cover" button all at once). There is also the hidden hand "helping" this all out: example: 12:10pm EST with 1.92B, two minutes later @ 12:12 it's 1.94B and shown as sales (red-they are NOT all sales but the bulk are or moar than 50% and shown as red). At 12:16pm EST you have 1.97B as red but two minutes later it's 1.98B but reported as buys (moar than 50% of it is buys) then 12:22pm EST it's 2B as slaes (red)...so you see the ping-pong going on here. Exactly 6 minutes.....6 minutes......6 minutes Doug E. Fresh yer on....uh, uh on you get 2.03B and then 2 minutes later another BIG chunk 2.05B as "sales" the red again. 1:16pmEST with 2.33B then another 6 minutes......6 minutes later Janet Yellen came on....uh,uh on (ESF likely watching this shit and providing the "help" for these massive chunks being dispose of). Moar at 3:02 of 2.97B and 2.99B 2 minutes later.......then @ 3:26 3.15B sale....3.17B @ 3:28PM....3:30pm 3.19B...3:34pm 3.24B....3:44PM 3.35B ...3:58pm 3.64B and the berry last one was

Some big volume started coming into the DOW at 3:14pm and has not seen the same "chunkage" that the NAS has seen...nowhere near it.

When is the Financial media gonna pick up this?.....NEVER. Where is Cramer or Gasbagarino?? Prolly busy dumping out the back door but telling you how "great" these markets are.

Spaceboi having issues now with his attempt at takng over Twatter and the volume showed up at 2:06PM EST and dropped it ...TSLA also had a dip at the same exact time-if below is true and he can't get the finage with partners he will need to use the holdings in TSLA and Fake X as collateral-see below for some info on all that. Imo this will never be allowed to happen-ammended (bigger offer) or not-they simply will not allow it-just look at how he was the "darling" of the left not very long ago and now he is the 'enemy'.

All this occuring with the "smack-downs" in the metals-and on the print day for the week no less!-Silver just hammered starting right at the NYMEX open at 8:30am EST and dropped like a wet sock all day-see cap #3. Gold still shellacked but not as 'obvious' in the paper dumping-at least they gave it some 'breathing room' with a respite or three (yellow arrows). Totally orgainc that....kek. Because with out-of-control inflation and stocks defying any sort of reality it makes total sense that the only real storage of wealth gets sold like that with contract after contract dropped on it like a liberals pants drop at the sight of anything related to supporting Muh Ukraine. There was actually a pretty decent buy in of 9.65K contracts at 5:18am EST in Ag but they are not liking that now-and likely the reson for the smackage.

Muh ¥ continues it's march towards 130 which in turn is what is driving the USD higherand except for a dip on Weds and into Thursday last week it has remained above 100 since April 11th...no coincidences there....love that 11 # don't they! see cap#4-THAT % move is gonna hurt soon. They won't tell you though. B.O.J. are getting nervous BIG Time and will need to intervene by soaking some of this up...or have the NYFRB do it via a currency swap-see bottom part of dis >>133358 pb Oil dropped pretty decently but still solidly above $100 p/bl and there was a big transaction on it at 2:52pm EST of 38.17K contracts (May Delivery) and looks like most were buys as it turned up right after that but that did not last long as it ended the day and closing on the LOD basically see cap#5 after a 5.44% loss-but you won't see that at the pumps though-up like a rocket and down like a feather

Treasuries continue the march towards higher yields with the 10 yer closing at 2.94% and the 2yr at 2.60% as stocks rallied, bonds were clubbed like a baby seal (despite growth being slashed), especially at the shorter-end (2Y +15bps, 30Y +6bps)...

Shell Withdraws Staff From Russia Projects as Exit Plan Begins

Shell Plc started to withdraw staff from its joint ventures with Russia’s Gazprom PJSC as it moves forward with plans to exit investments in response to the war in Ukraine. Dozens of Shell employees on temporary assignment at the Sakhalin-2 liquefied natural gas export project in Russia were removed over the weekend to be relocated back to other offices, according to people with knowledge of the matter. Operations at the facility are unlikely to be affected by the move, the people said, requesting anonymity to discuss private details.

Shell is demobilizing its seconded employees in ventures with Gazprom and Gazprom Neft in a phased process, according to an emailed statement from the company. “Our key focus in this process is safety of our people and operations and compliance with applicable laws,” a Shell spokesperson said. Some of the world’s top energy producers, including Shell and Exxon Mobil Corp., pledged to exit Russian projects in a bid to reduce reputational damage after the invasion of Ukraine. Shell said earlier this month that the withdrawal will result in $4 billion to $5 billion of impairments.

London-based Shell has increased its effort to distance itself from Moscow after the company came under fire in early March for purchasing Russian crude at a steep discount. Since then, Shell said it won’t make any new purchases of Russian oil or gas. The energy major has also idled LNG vessels chartered from Russian companies. Shell also owns a 50% of stake in the Salym Petroleum Development in Russia. The company previously said it would end an exploration partnership with Gazprom called Gydan, and withdraw from the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, which was already suspended by German authorities.
