Zelensky Says Answer On EU Membership Bid Is Imminent After Von der Leyen Visit
In late Saturday statements Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky asserted that his country's membership in the EU would "strengthen" the entirety of Europe. He said Ukraine is in the "final phase of the big diplomatic marathon," noting that the world should have an answer on Ukraine's candidacy bid in a mere week-and-a-half, in translated comments. "What else needs to happen in Europe to make it clear to skeptics that the very fact of keeping Ukraine outside the European Union works against Europe?" the Ukrainian president questioned. "For example, everything is already obvious to the Russian occupiers. They say so when they torment our people that it is allegedly for the fact that Ukraine has gone to Europe. And why does Europe have skeptics then?" Zelensky's comments came just after European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's visit to Kiev on Saturday, where she sported a flak jacket and heavy security detail.

The Ukrainian leader said after the meeting with von der Leyen that the European Commission will soon prepare a conclusion regarding Ukraine's application. He told the Ukrainian public that "all the necessary answers in a very short time, and it was done well." Von der Leyen also confirmed that a decision to recommend Ukraine's candidacy will soon be made known. However, she emphasized this would be a mere preliminary step: "EU leaders are due to meet on the 17th of June ahead of an upcoming summit on the 23rd and 24th of June. Now the EU Commission is expected to recommend Ukraine's candidacy to join the EU - but that is just a preliminary step; there are many more along the road. Notably, all 27 member states would need to agree on Ukraine becoming a candidate and we know that already there have been divisions among EU member states."
It remains the consensus among most Western officials is that the full membership process is likely to take years, not months or weeks. A weekend Washington Post report cited EU officials who said it's actually more like "decades". Zelensky sought to connect the dire battlefield situation in the Donbas, where it appears Ukrainian forces are in retreat, to the urgency of EU membership. "No one can say now how long this burning of souls by Russia will last. But we must do everything to make the occupiers regret that they have done all this, and to hold them accountable for every murder and every strike at our beautiful state," Zelensky said. In particular, the final holdout city of Sievierodonetsk could imminently fall to the Russians: "Fierce street battles continue in Sievierodonetsk," he said. "I am proud of all our defenders who managed to stop the advance of these hostile people, these occupiers for many weeks already and keep our defense strong."
A number of commentators have meanwhile noted that if EU membership is achieved, entry to NATO would not be far behind - though in the latter case Turkey is currently source of inter-NATO strife over Finland and Sweden's proposed memberships and applications.

There is an FOMC meeting this week and announcement on Weds. and they all expect a 50bp hike-"Kenny's Chicken". The loose rule of thumb is usually after just under 3 days of 'down' they need to arrest it and they all start thinking about it at the close of the second 'down' day (so that would have been Fridays close) and those 'decisions' are pretty much made by about 2.5 days into the 'down'-which will be Monday at about 12pm est or they risk eating themselves with potential margin calls and creating a feedback loop of dollar grabbing-which sends the dollar index up. We've already seen the NYFRB taking in YUGE quantities of Yen and converting them into $s (via the reverse repo process) so we'll need to watch what Muh Yen does in the next few days as well.
They need to be prepared for what habbens going into the close of the third day of 'down' if the follows through from Friday. So in order for the call of a YUGE Bear Trap to be correct we will need to see a YUGE rally to wipe out the remainder of the June OpEx and kill off the big ones sitting on the July expiry... (and if you are still in those June puts and did not sell those into fridays close-BAD Pepe!)

Starting in April, dangerous rhetoric related to regional nuclear aspirations began coming out of Poland - apparently directed as a 'threat' to Russia amid the invasion of Ukraine. Early that month, for example, ruling Polish party leader, Deputy Prime Minister Jaroslaw Kaczynski suggested that a "tougher" anti-Russian defense posture would include Poland being "open" to having nuclear weapons stationed in the country.
But this weekend has seen the rhetoric heighten even further, eliciting a fierce response from Moscow, when Poland's European Parliament Deputy and former Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski suggested that the West give nukes to Kiev. "The West has the right to give Ukraine nuclear warheads so that it can protect its independence," Sikorski said according to regional sources. As also detailed in a Yahoo News/Ukrayinska Pravda report, "He argued that Russia broke the terms of the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances by refusing to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and integrity, so nuclear weapons should be returned to Kyiv, even though Ukrainians voluntarily disposed of them."
In response, a top Russian Duma official warned that such a scenario would mean central Europe would in effect "cease to exist" as it would surely trigger nuclear war: The Head of the State Duma of the Russian Federation, Viacheslav Volodin, threatens that if the suggestion by the former Foreign Minister of Poland Radoslaw Sikorski to provide Ukraine with nuclear weapons is fulfilled, then the possible nuclear conflict will destroy the European continent.
